Hi Guys, I'm building hi end custom mac on X79 chipset,
Looks like there are 2 versions of this card:

http://www.gigabyte.us/products/comparison/list.aspx?ck=2&pids=4287,4049

Chipset
Intel® C606 Express Chipset
Intel® X79 Express Chipset

The one with chipset C606 has wifi:

http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Intel-Extended-Motherboard-GA-X79S-UP5-WIFI/dp/B0094ROHYK/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1362336100&sr=1-3&keywords=GA-X79-UD5

Is there a difference on the chipset side for custom mac ?

Will the included wifi module work out of the box ?

Thanks

The WiFi is supplied from a PCIe card and the half height mPCIe card on the PCIe card is incompatible. You would have to replace it with a Dell DW1515 or other Atheros 9280 mPCIe card.

The C606 express chipset is for use with the E5 Xeon processors. The X79 express chipset is for use with Core i7 processors fro socket 2011 platform. You could use either chipset, but the Xeons are much more expensive then the Core i7s

I will be using i7-3930 extreme 3rd generation.

Is c606 better ? In spec it says "CPU: Support for Intel Core i7 processors in the LGA2011 package"

Any reason to go with it or just stick with X79 UD5 version ?

Here where I live the regular UD5 is nowhere to be found and the Asus rampage is $100 more expensive ...

Plus will 3rd generation i7-3930k work at all with ML ?

I have this same issue, can't get hold of a UD5 from any reputable dealers and the Rampage is just so much more money :(

I have all the parts but the motherboard, It's frustrating.

c606 chipset is mainly found in workstations and servers. X79 is more mainstream. No reason you can't use an i7 3930K with the C606.
Since there is no official Apple support for either chipset and the X79 boards work, try it. If it doesn't work RMA tha board for a swap to a X79.
