Hi everyone,
I've recently installed a fresh copy of Catalina on my system (it always worked well until Mojave), now it seems like it stucks on updates.
I've tried multiple time to install this macOS Catalina Security Update 2022-004 10.15.7 but without success, the system reboot than the message of the update available comes back.

Any suggestion?

Thank you

My system is based on:

Asus P8H61M-LX 3.0
CPU Intel I5 3570
GFX MSI Nvidia GT 210 2GB ddr3

I am experiencing the same issue – after using UniBeast to upgrade from Mojave to Catalina, I tried to install the 2022-004 Catalina security update, but after looking as if it was going through the update process (9 minute update), it doesn't seem to have actually done anything. Software Update still thinks this update needs to be installed.

Hi both.

This can happen because the update will include Firmware updates specific to Apple hardware, and these can, obviously, fail causing the process to either not work or get stuck.

If you let macOS download the update it will sit in your Drive:Library/Updates folder as a numbered sub-folder with a name such as 001-12345. In there you will have several installers. If you only run the one pkg with the main update - basically the largest one, such as: "SecUpd2022-004Catalina.pkg" - and not any of the others, you should update okay.

In this process only the main OS is updated, but you can see one for the Recovery partition, in the folder, if you want to use it.

Thank you for this! I have cleared out that directory, because there were remnants of multiple attempts at installing this update, and had Software Update download it anew. This resulted in the following files being present in /Library/Updates:

index.plist
PPDVersions.plist
ProductMetadata.plist
(folder) 002-83068
002-83068.English.dist
002-83068.English.extrainfo
EmbeddedOSFirmware.pkg
EmbeddedOSFirmware.pkg.integrityDataV1
FirmwareUpdate.pkg
FirmwareUpdate.pkg.integrityDataV1
FullBundleUpdate.pkg
FullBundleUpdate.pkg.integrityDataV1
MacOSBrain.pkg
MacOSBrain.pkg.integrityDataV1
SecUpd2022-004Catalina.pkg
SecUpd2022-004Catalina.pkg.IntegrityDataV1
SecUpd2022-004Catalina.RecoveryHDUpdate.pkg
SecUpd2022-004Catalina.RecoveryHDUpdate.pkg.IntegrityDataV1
SecureBoot.pkg
SecureBoot.pkg.IntegrityDataV1

Running SecUpd2022-004Catalina.pkg results in the message: "This package is incompatible with this version of MacOS. The package is trying to install content to the system volume. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance." The only option is Quit. Does this mean I have to boot into Recovery and do "csrutil disable"?

The current system version is 10.15.7 (19H2). This is on the hardware with details listed under my account information, which should be in the left panel. It thinks it's an "iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019)" because of how I've got Clover configured.

To answer my own question, I booted into Recovery and ran "csrutil disable" from the Terminal, then rebooted and tried running SecUpd2022-004Catalina.pkg. Same message. But I was able to run SecUpd2022-004Catalina.RecoveryHDUpdate.pkg. So after doing that, I booted back into Recovery and again ran "csrutil disable" from the Terminal. After another reboot, however, running SecUpd2022-004Catalina.pkg resulted in the same incompatibility message. Software Update still says that the 2022-004 update has yet to be installed.

Usually that message occurs if the update is purely incremental - e.g you might have to already be at 2022-003 before you can update to 2022-004. Obviously if you are already at 2022-003 then the problem lies elsewhere.

The other, longer way, around this is to download a fresh full installer package from the App Store and then run that as a re-install. This should leave your settings and documents in place and just update the system. (Once in a while though Apple doesn't fully update the installer...)

As always - back-up, back-up, back-up before doing anything serious.

I use the standalone 2022-004 Security Update downloaded from Apple to install the security update using a spare hard disk on my X99 system. It installed fine, and then I cloned the updated system using SuperDuper 3.3.1 to my first three systems. Each system successfully booted back into Catalina using Clover 5119.

macOS Catalina 10.5.7 with Security Update 2021-008 (19H1615)
On OC 0.7.7 with SIP set to 77000000 (also tried with 67000000 and 0)
Check for updates mostly never completes (done once but failed to install anyway)

Screenshot 2022-05-29 at 17.37.22.png

So downloaded SecUpd2022-003CatalinaManual.dmg (and also 004)

It will not even install manually (from either GUI or terminal with installer)

Anybody any ideas?

Gave up on trying to "fix it"
Booted to Recovery, reinstalled the OS, downloaded SecUpd2022-004
Run it and this time it went with no problem, restarted, updated

Code:
sw_vers
ProductName: Mac OS X
ProductVersion: 10.15.7
BuildVersion: 19H1922

SoftwareUpdate picked up Safari 15.5, installed fine
