Pre Update Notes
:
- This update may break some of your Big Sur functions. Make sure you backup first. :thumbup:

- Make sure you use the latest versions of the Lilu.kext, AppleALC.kext and WhateverGreen.kext.

Here's the step by step way to update:
:ch:Backup your current installation using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper;

:ch: Update to the latest Clover or OpenCore 0.7.4.
See the tonymacx86 Clover Builds (in Download menu) to update Clover. To update your OpenCore, see this guide. To convert from Clover to Open Core, see this guide.

Note: Before you update, make sure your USB ports are properly mapped. I recommend you use this procedure by @ohchang in his post here to do the USB port mapping or the USB ports will not work.

:ch: Download the Big Sur 11.6.1 Update from Apple's Mac App Store using System Preferences > Software Update, and run it - the updater will reboot upon completion.
Note: Update will reboot several times; each time Clover/OpenCore picks the correct boot partition. So, sit back and relax. The update takes 3 reboots and ~30 minutes to complete.

11.6->11.61 (20G224) took 32 minutes from beginning of download to display request for Apple ID. Did this twice, once for each of my 2 SSDs in computer at left. No apparent problems.

Remarkable moment: the first macOS update that is not a “Security Update” for an older macOS version.

Updated my hack desktop earlier today. Before I installed the update I updated OpenCore from 0.7.3, to 0.7.4. Checked my config, updated Apple ALC and Whatevergreen to latest, everything else was ok. Took 2 reboots and 25 min. My MoBo is a rather aged GA-Z170X UD5 TH. Powercolor RX 5500XT. SMBios set to iMac 17,1

HackbookPro15,2 (HP Envy x360 15m: Kabylake R i5-8250U/UHD620) updated to 11.6.1 without issues. Very smooth update (OpenCore 0.7.4).

I don't think this is a "major software update" for Big Sur.

According to Howard Oakley, Big Sur has entered "Security Support", and both 11.6 and 11.6.1 are just security updates :

It is obvious by now Apple will not provide standalone updaters for Big Sur. You can only update Big Sur by using the software update or the full installer.
