The Mac Mini (Mid 2007) and 2009 are identical cases.

Has anyone managed to mod this thing to get PC components in and running?

Well with a size of 2.0 x 6.5 x 6.5 in/5.1 x 16.5 x 16.5 cm the mini-itx is too large. The NUC type of system would fit, however I have not seen any of these conversions.

The newer Mac Mini case will accept a thin mini-itx motherboard and a few of those have been done. Check this one out: http://www.tonymacx86.com/others/182708-mac-mini-2011-build.html

Good modding,

Intel is supposed to be releasing a new form factor, Mini STX, which is a 5x5 inch board. I think Asroc has already shown a board somewhere on their website and at CES (?), but I have yet to see it released. I'm waiting for them to show up.

In the mean time I'm off and running with another MacMini project that needs a Thin Mini-ITX board.

Just been looking at Mini STX motherboards. pretty small only thing you'll be missing out on is PCI-E slot. So you'll be stuck with intel iGPU. Asrock has released the first board from what I've been reading.

Mini-STX boards fit great!

Still in the dev stages, I should have it complete this weekend.
