I'm still a little unclear about M.2 and PCIe vs. AHCI vs. NVMe modes/interconnects. All I can tell you is that I have a Samsung SM951 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VELD92U/?tag=tonymacx86com-20) SSD (I believe that is on an M.2 PCIe interface) installed in my system on a PCIe x4 adapter card, which is recognized OOB as an "Apple SSD Controller", and it works perfectly. This is the adapter card I have: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MYCQP38/?tag=tonymacx86com-20.

Think of it this way :

M.2 = Form factor (Previously NGFF)

M.2 Connector is linked to PCIE (normally 3.0 but previously used 2.0)

M.2 Interface is either AHCI or NVMe (Can also be USB or other types and is keyed appropriately)
