This is a official problem after the osSierra installation I loss the volume control with my integrated Audio (Realtek ALC889A) on my iMac8,1 (2008 early)

I had the same problem as you, for me the solution I found was to use SoundFlower to make stereo-output there that uses the internal speakers, then set audio output in System Preferences to use that SoundFlower-output instead, after that I can use the volume keys again
