Long time coming atx G5

Sometimes I do think it would be easier just painting the whole darn thing. But I made up my mind long ago that when I finally got to do this I was only going to paint primarily the back.

Alas, another set back however. After getting the port to look like I wanted I got around to testing it. I didn't have a USB c to USB c cord before today. Well, it only partially passed. Data transfer was half speed, and power was also. Either the cord was defective when I got it, or I damaged it at some point going full ham while attempting to affix it to the PCB.

Already ordered another USB a to USB c cable. I'll try again, but perhaps a little more gentle this time.

How i know about setbacks. I've been working on my case mod for nearly 3 months, mostly because setbacks come up and you have to change plans or fix something or order yet another item and it all takes a lot of time. I spent so much time trying painting only to have to sand and restart because of imperfections. I've tried the Krylon short cuts silver which was highly recommended here and it's almost a dead on match.....but it doesn't dry. Like ever. I've tested it on lots of material and left it to dry for days, weeks, and you can always rub some off. So I tried a matte clear coat, which worked but changed the color to a darker shade so it wouldn't really match the silver anymore.

It's a labor of love for real. If I knew more about tools and how to do this kind of stuff it would go faster

Man, I have been away for some time. Work got stupid. Then it got stupider. Now it's just plain old brain dead. I have managed a little more on the case though.

The plan I had for the usb c on the front didn't pan out. It wouldn't work how I wanted it to work without shelling out quite a bit of money for the requisite parts. So, I scrapped the pcb I had and re-did it with one usb 3 port up front, and an original firewire port. Albeit a non functioning one. If I couldn't have what I wanted at a reasonable price, then I'd just prefer to maintain the original aesthetic.

I made a little shelf in the case that a braced up power sockets bolts up to:

Then I spent waaaaaaay to long modifying the original bottom shelf, but I like it:

I think it goes well with the laserhive front fan mount:

And now I can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel. Oh, also killed a cordless drill cutting a hole in the top shelf with a hole saw... But it came out well:

Now I think it's about time to over-build a panel that sits between the motherboard and front fans.

Just another shot of the hole:

The front I was talking about earlier:

This all looks similar to what I had a few posts up, but it took me a while to secure everything, and make adjustments to get the fit right. Not to mention the time spent looking for little hardware bits that I kinda forgot the location of...

Anywho:

I made the panel, and painted it. So happy with how it turned out:

Then it hit me.... I forgot to cut out holes for the cables! Dang it Dang it Dang it!

I think I'm going to call her painted. I could use some input though. I'm not sure about the grill. I'm just not sold on the color. But I'm not sure if I want to go darker, or lighter. A different shade, or different sheen, or hell maybe even a metallic:

I would say metallic. Something close to the original colors

Repainted the grille with a metallic. The can I had however was in gloss. After adding the matte clear, what little metallic the paint had went away. I knew it could happen... but was kinda hoping that it wouldn't. I like this color better than the rustoleum smoke gray I had before though. I may try something different later... I duno. Also painted the i/o shield matte white. Stock, the Ud3r motherboard i/o shield is less than appealing.

Additionally, I sanded the stainless steel screws and washers down, gave them a little heat treatment. I then gave them a little attention from a scuff pad. All this to knock down the shine and brightness down.

Wow, your case is amazing. I also have a G5 but it is very scratched, are you completely renewing yours? Super ideas with USB-C ;)
