Comments

My previous build from 8/2013 (Loginfailed's Build - P8Z77-M / 3770K / 650 Ti ) has been running strong but for me it is hard to leave things alone for too long. I’ve been wanting to do a new build with a more current set of components and repurpose the old parts for something else. For this build I again used the TJ08B-E mATX case. I like the compact size, simplistic design and quiet fan setup. I use a slim DVD drive because I like the DVD to be in the top slot. A full size DVD will fit in the top slot, but the modular PSU cables are a tight fit. The slim drive is not as deep giving more room for cable management in the top of the case. The other advantage to using the slim DVD is that 4 SSDs will fit just below the drive, which allows removal of the internal drive cage for better air flow through the case. For now I still use one mechanical drive mounted in the floor of the case for storage. In the future I will add more SSDs for storage and eliminate the need for mechanical drives.

Installation

Until now, all of my builds have used the Chimera boot loader. This is my first time using the Clover boot loader. I’m not an expert with Clover but did a lot of searching and reading, then some more searching and some more reading and figured it out as I went along. I will outline the process and guides I followed and hopefully it will be an example for others.

Before doing anything, completely read and understand the whole Clover guide posted by Tonymacx86, here:

http://www.tonymacx86.com/yosemite-desktop-guides/144426-how-install-os-x-yosemite-using-clover.html

  1. Clover Guide > Step One > Download OS X Yosemite
  2. Clover Guide > Step Two > Prepare Bootable USB Drive
    • For the config.plist, I used the “config.plist-Standard.zip” at the bottom of the Clover Guide
    • I made one change to the standard config.plist. Under Graphics > Inject I changed Intel from YES to NO
    • When installing clover to the USB drive, these are the drivers I selected. They may not all be necessary but these selections resulted in successfully reaching the Yosemite installer.
      • EmuVariableUefi-64.efi
      • FSInject-64.efi
      • OsxAptioFixDrv-64.efi
      • OsxFatBinaryDrv-64.efi
      • PartitionDxe-64.efi
      • VBoxHfs-64.efi
  3. Clover Guide > Step Three > Install OS X Yosemite

    • UEFI Settings
      1. To access UEFI Setup, press and hold Delete on a USB Keyboard while the system is booting up
      2. Set to Optimized Defaults
      3. Ai Overclock Tuner > XMP
      4. Primary Display > PCIe
      5. Secure Boot > Other OS
      6. Note: There may be other settings you wish to change, but at this stage it is best to keep it simple
    • For best results, insert USB installer into a USB 2.0 port on the back IO panel of the motherboard
    • Turn on computer and hold F8 to reach the boot device selection screen
    • Select UEFI: "model of your USB drive"
    • Complete the installation following the TonymacX86 Clover Guide
  4. Clover Guide > Step 4 > Post-Installation
    1. Reformat EFI partition to FAT32
    2. Install Clover to Yosemite. Select Custom Install with the following options:
      108009d1413735003-how-install-os-x-yosemite-using-clover-clover-11.png
    3. Follow the rest of the Tonymacx86 Clover Guide
    4. In EFI > EFI > Clover > drivers64UEFI these are the list of drivers I have:
      • FSInject-64.efi
      • OsxAptioFixDrv-64.efi
      • OsxFatBinaryDrv-64.efi
      • VBoxHfs-64.efi
    5. I will attach a working generic Clover config.plist that is the same as mine but without my serial numbers
    6. Restart
  5. CPU Power Management SSDT

Audio

For audio, I actually have 3 different options. I have the Turtle Beach Micro II USB adapter that works OOB, audio over the Displayport output of the GTX 760 and the ALC887 motherboard audio.

For help with audio over HDMI and/or Displayport, see Toleda's guide: Audio - HDMI Audio AppleHDA [Guide]

For help with onboard audio, see Toleda's guide: Audio - Realtek ALC AppleHDA [Guide]

I'm currently using onboard audio enabled using Multibeast 7.2 with the following options:

WiFi, Bluetooth and Handoff

Currently I do not have any Bluetooth adapters installed and have the TP Link WDN-4800 from a previous build. One of my next projects will be to assemble a compatible WiFi and Bluetooth combo card as outlined in Tonymacx86's post here:

Continuity and Handoff Capable Apple Mini Cards + PCIe and mini-PCIe Adapters

iMessage

I have been able to get iMessage working on Yosemite using Clover boot loader only. Using Chimera/Chameleon, my attempts were not fruitful. For information on how to get iMessage working, see jaymonkey's guide here:

Conclusion

This machine is working great as far as I've tested it. Everything I've tried seems to work perfectly. For some reason when I sleep, shut down or restart the machine it takes about 10-20 seconds before the power supply and the fans shut down. I'm OK with that, but intend to look into it further when I get more time. Sleep and wake are working as expected. WiFi and LAN working as expected. The Moshi Luna is a very slick little keyboard. Sometimes I work in the dark and since I'm not a pro at typing, the backlit keys are a nice touch. Backlight level is adjustable OFF/1/2/3/4. The Logitech M500 is a nice no-frills corded mouse with selectable standard or inertia style scolling and forward/back buttons.

Upgrades planned. 34" 21x9 Ultra-Wide Monitor | Upgrade to 32 GB RAM | Samsung XP941 M.2 Boot Drive

If you made it this far, thanks for reading! Let me know if you have success with a similar build.

Update:. the slow shutdown issue mentioned was resolved by removing /S/L/E/GenericUSBXHCI.kext. At some point I was having trouble copying some data to a thumb drive and I installed that .kext to see if it would help.

I found this thread through the search function with the terms "slow shutdown".

I used the Generic config.plist file but did not work. But ,when I use your attached config.plist, it will boot up nicely, and I was able to install macOS Sierra. But post installation, I failed to make it work using standard clover method since I not familiar with Clover Configurator. So, I use standard MultiBeast method to basically make Audio/LAN to work post installation.
