Q. Is there a way to make Radeon or Nvidia graphics work in my dual-GPU laptop?

Not if the discrete card is not dedicated (eg. tied to the Intel device).

The discrete graphics capability in a switched dual-GPU configuration is not supported with OS X on hacks. Best you can do is disable the discrete part with SSDT/DSDT patches. See the prior question.

If your discrete device (AMD Radeon or Nvidia) is not routed through the Intel GPU, then it is considered dedicated. Some laptops have the internal display connected to the Intel GPU and the external HDMI/DP port connected to the discrete graphics device. It is rare, but in that case you would be able to get the device to work with the external display with proper kexts and correct configuration, much like a dual-GPU desktop setup.

Hello everyone, I was wondering if it was possible (and made sense) to make a list of laptops (or graphics cards) that DO NOT ship with switched mode, and some criteria to distinguish discrete and dedicated, in order to help people that want to use dedicated graphics also on macOS.
I hope someone ( RehabMan) could provide a detailed description of differences between dedicated and discrete graphics, since online there's a lot of confusion about this.
Thanks to everyone.

Dedicated secondary graphics will have its output(s) connected directly, instead of through the Intel framebuffer.

Do you know any laptop that uses this kind of connection?

There are quite a few, but I'm not tracking which ones...
One example is the HP ZBook (to my knowledge, no one has managed to get the Nvidia working in macOS/OS X though).

Hi petapton. I'm looking for this as well. My EliteBook 850 is underpowered for what I need and I'd like to find something that can match or exceed a MacBook Pro Mid-2014 2.8ghz with Nvidia GT 750M but for half the price. It's possible but I have not yet found a laptop with dedicated graphics upon which to build my church. I wish someone would start a definitive list of at least the top 10 laptops with dedicated graphics Nvidia or AMD that are working with hackitosh. That would be so useful!

Hello. I think the best approach to achieve the goal is to go to a shopping center and start to reboot every computer, to see if you can disable integrated graphics through BIOS settings. As regards your EliteBook, did you manage to use the dedicated graphics?

It's not possible to use dedicated graphics with the AMD Radeon equipped EliteBook 850 G2 due to its use of the Enduro GPU switching architecture which is the AMD equivalent of Optimus used by Nvidia. I think ASUS makes laptops with dedicated GPU in their ROG line. I'm hoping to find something in the Clevo or Eluktronics products that can suit my needs since they are very upgradeable and modular as far as components.

I had my eye on the Eluktronics P650HP6-G but just never had the confidence to drop the considerable coin these units cost to try it out for myself. I figured for all that cash I could just get a loaded 2014 MacBook Retina which I have now. I've since purchased a cheap $200 EliteBook 850 G2 again just because I miss hackintoshing and I know this unit works 100%. I think on paper that Eluktronics unit should work just like I said I don't know anybody who has one working. I may have read a few threads but never got a definitive sense that it works. Best of fortune on your own Hackintosh quest!
