News reports that Apple has removed the last remnants of Intel's USB controller chips from their latest M2 laptops

Curious.

While this does seem clear - who doesn't believe ifixit? - Apple needs a USB controller. Currently the M1 Mac Mini I have uses a Fresco Logic FL1100 chip to provide the service. This a well-known and venerable chipset often used in add-on cards for Mac Pros. Support is built-in to macOS. Obviously.

However Thunderbolt and USB4 are closely connected and a joint effort of the consortium. Intel leading Thunderbolt.

So it will be interesting if Apple really does want to "re-invent the wheel" just out of spite.
