I have noticed something really strange with my i5-8250U. With the everything being the same, sometimes its idle consumption can go as low as 0.73 watts on IntelPowerGadget, however most of the time its idle consumption is around 1.5W. I think this makes a huge difference in battery life. In both cases, speedstep is working correctly. The CPU can throttle down. However the lowest power consumption seems to be independent of the lowest frequency the CPU runs. I think 0.73W is the reasonable number under windows and that is how battery last longer under windows.
Since it is a hit and miss situation, the first time I observed 0.73W is under Clover 5102 with PlugType=1, with some CPUFreindData that I downloaded from somewhere. Upgrade to Clover 5107/5118 the idle consumption would stay around 1.5W. Then I tried to use SSDTPRGEN to generate a SSDT file, that seems to work with 5118. However, after I tried to generate a new CPUFriendDATA of my own, it won't get to 0.73W. The strange thing is revert back to the old version CPUFriendDATA does not seem to change it back. I was originally use MacBookPro15,2 profile.
In my other settings that has i7-8650U, with OC, the lowest idle consumption I can achieve is 2.2W (with Turbo Boost off, but I don't think it matters when it comes to idle power consumption), which is similar to the 1.5W situation.
Does anyone else have a consistent idle consumption under 1W for KabyLakeR CPU? Any guidance?
