By the way, what do you think is the root cause of the issue *if* I were able to boot into the OS properly?

I messed around with some usb kexts to get my 3.0 ports working

Booting with the usb gave me no luck. Recovery also froze in the same spot. Any suggestions?

You can't boot from your system disk, your Recovery partition or your USB, restore your backup.
No backup ?
Wipe it and reinstall.

I have a time machine backup.. but that won't help with the boot loader, kexts, etc. I guess I'll have to wipe and start from scratch
