Kernel Builder Anywhere ?

Going back many moons ago I used to build Gentoo systems, part of the install process was to customise the kernel. This was accomplished with what I assume was a scripted menu system which was then compiled as a kernel that was saved in the Grub boot loader.

I was just wondering if there was anything similar for OSX/Darwin and would it help getting past my dreaded 'PCI Configuration Begin' woes ?

K(ernal) + EXT (ension) = kext....
During install process you are extending the kernel. Adding extensions.

You are not working from source code where you are essentially doing a conditional assembly of compiled code. Linux ...
