Greetings,

So I am trying to install El Capitan on my Hackintosh using the install guide on this beloved website. I used unibeast to install the boot loader on a USB and all went great. I then tried to boot from the USB after switching my BIOS over to UEFI and Legacy and when I try to boot into the installer I get a black screen.

I have tried installing the boot loader using the UEFI setting and using the legacy setting. Using the UEFI setting I would get a kernel panic, and using legacy I get a black screen.

I am using a Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H motherboard
16g of DDR3 RAM
Corsair battery
Samsung SSD
GTX 970

I guess I am kinda frustrated that we are ditching chimera for a new boot loader and I am sure that is part of the issue. I tried following some of the ideas presented on the Clover Basics and Switching advice Guide but to no avail and ended up putting the ktexts and extra folder back so that I was back to my smooth-running Yosemite install.

A couple easy questions. Should I use the legacy setting on the unibeast install or the UEFI setting? When selecting the USB boot drive from BIOS, should I select select the UEFI or the legacy drive? At this point I feel like I am banging my head against the wall. I am going to do a Carbon Copy of my hard drive tomorrow morning so hopefully I can get more adventurous but I am a little scared without knowing I can boot successfully from my USB. Thanks for the help!

Uefi is the future (that's already happening) whether you like it or not really. Also the fact that I can update OS X without reinstalling kexts like in the chimera days makes me feel glad that chimera is dead.

Without a screen shot of its panic in what no one can really tell you what's going on.

Make sure you have a look at http://www.tonymacx86.com/el-capita...ing-install-el-capitan-gigabyte-z77-ds3h.html

If you set your BIOS to boot both UEFI and Legacy, you should use the BIOS hotkey to select a boot device and make sure you select an entry starting with UEFI if you want a UEFI boot, and an entry starting without UEFI if you want a Legacy boot. Often it defaults to the wrong boot style even if it picks the right drive.

Also, if you're upgrading (vs a clean install) you'll probably have some incompatible kexts that you need to remove -- they often cause kernel panics.
