It seems like it's basically a competition between the last gen nVidia cards (GTX 260, 275, 285) vs. the ATI Radeon 5800 series (5850 and 5870). I got a 5870, so I expect I'll get respectable performance, but it seems that the GTX 2xx series are better bang for the buck, since they can be found online (mostly used) very cheaply!

Perhaps some real world performance numbers from either of these series would be helpful if anyone can provide them.

I like that this thread is taking off! :)

q9550 + gtx260.

After two gtx460's decided to try gtx470. Funny thing, 3 months ago I got 200 euros for a used gtx460. Last one went for 120 eur. One should never spend more than a hundred on a card, the prices drop very quickly above that. On the other hand, I think the street price of q9550 has been around 200 eur for the last 2 years.

Wish granted...

We really do need so sort of actual Application test, the benchmarking tool seems somewhat abstract.

In the past Cinebench was fairly popular:

For OpenGL 3d responsiveness, maybe using the Modo demo plus a test scene will help?

Here is my hack system. EVGA 8800 GTS 512mb.

I also tested the XFX Radeon 5770, 5850 and 5870, but only for 3d application performance (Maya, Modo, etc..) and I found the Radeon cards performed at about 1/3-1/2 the speed of the Nividia 8800gts.

3D application performance in OSX has always been slower than in Win, plus has seemed to be more dependent upon overall system performance than in Windows. In my many years of experience in OSX , the Radeon cards has always been much slower than Nvidia in 3d Application performance.

My advice has been and will always be, don't buy ATI cards for productivity, they are really only good for gaming. Same is usually true in Windows, you get what you pay for.

Now I have a Radeon 5850 to dump on Craigslist, lesson re-learned!
