iMessage: fresh install

i did a fresh install of el capitan but haven't signed into iMessage yet to avoid the customer code alert.

is there a way to check if it's good to go?

or should i just follow these steps?

While I have not read that particular guide, several people have reported success with that method. I have read and understand jaymonkey's http://www.tonymacx86.com/general-help/110471-how-fix-imessage.html, but, it goes quite in depth, and may be too much for some...
 
Yes, that method is working for me.
