    Hello everybody,

All you guys having made many amazing mods, you inspiring me so much that I dream all nights about this project (my wife begins being upset.. :)

SinoNeptune & superslurt mods especially inspired me for this project, you guys did an amazing work.

    I'm considering modding an iMac G4 with NUC Skull Canyon (nuc6i7kyk) on the base + a 21.5in 4K Retina Display (LM215UH1 from the iMac 21.5in late 2015 - A1418, iMac16,2).

I'll follow mainly superslurt's mod for the NUC part, and SinoNeptune's one for the display (well, the display shell).

I don't see any issue on the NUC part as superslurt's mod confirms this fits and RehabMan's guide confirms macOS Sierra works on it (it works on my NUC6i5). Moreover, some feedbacks are that 4K displays work with the guide, so hopefully the LM215UH1 panel (from iMac 21.5in, again) should work.

The main challenge for now is to find a LCD controller with DisplayPort input / eDP output capable of managing up to a 4096x2160@60Hz resolution. Most of the LCD controllers I've found on the internet are only capable of managing up to a 1080p resolution. The only 4K LCD controller I've found is the SVX-4096 from DigitalView which should work (hopefully).

The fact is that I cannot find any datasheet of the iMac 21.5in's panel and I cannot be sure it will work with this LCD controller (obviously, the company did not test it with this panel).

I see two main issues for now:
    1. Connectors: is the eDP panel's connector standard and fits the LCD controller's I-PEX 20455-030E-12 molex (Matching type: I-PEX 20454-030T) + input power panel's connector fits the LCD controller's Molex 43045-0400 compatible (Matching connector type : Molex 43025-0400 compatible) (Matching power cable : P/N 426013710-3)) - see the LCD controller's manual.
    2. 4K with "doubled" pixel: iMac's display is not a standard 4K. This is a "doubled" pixel with a downscaled 2560x1440 resolution. I don't know if this downscaling is managed either by macOS or the iMac's motherboard or the panel's motherboard.

Any help from you guys would be very helpful, especially if you have the iMac panel's datasheet :)

    Julien

A quick update on this project:

As I cannot find any datasheet of the iMac's 21.5in 4K Retina Display, this solution it's way too risky as I have no guarantee this will work.

Then, I'm now considering plugging a LG UltraFine 4K display via the Skull Canyon's Type-C connector (which supports DisplayPort 1.2). I have the confirmation from the Intel support that the Skull Canyon works well with this display (under Windows confirmed - under macOS seems working but with hibernation issues).

The challenge now is to find a fanless 300W PSU with minimal dimensions to put into the iMac's Faraday cage in order to power both the Skull Canyon and the display at once.
