Hi everyone guys! I've upgraded my old 2009 iMac to Yosemite but it's so SLOW! So i've thinked about replace the optical drive with an SSD, but i've discovered sum issue with SATA 2 port... So i have done a test replacing the supD with a 2,5" HDD and TADA bad news...

Some solutions ??

i've alredy disassembled all, now there is a 2,5" HDD linked to the SATA port of the SuperDrive and this is the info report

now i doubt that a SSD in SATA 1 is really faster than a HDD in SATA 2... I have to replace the HDD 3,5" with the SSD and the SupD with the 2,5" HDD and use the HDD 3,5" as an external HDD, but i don't like this solution

The specifications on these models around this period in time had some changes. In most models you are able to replace the main original 3.5" HDD with an SSD fitted to a 2.5">3.5" adaptor. Some models also required an additional Thermal sensor kit when replacing some drives.

Some models had a software upgrade that changed the optical port speed to SATA 3 speed. I suggest that you clearly identify your model of iMac and see what you are able to do with the hardware that you have. Spend time finding out what your hardware is suitable for rather than trying to do things that it may not be able to do - or if any other steps are needed to get the Sata ports running at a higher speed. There is little point in running an SSD from the optical Sata port - this would be best suited to a HDD - either the original 3.5" drive or a replacement drive fitted in a HDD cradle in the space previously occupied by the optical drive.

this is the guide for my mac https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+iMac+Intel+24-Inch+EMC+2267+Dual+Hard+Drive/9070 i already know that i need the Adapter to place the SSD in the SupD place, but there aren't info on the Linked Speed.

EDIT:

this guy has the same issue https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/85924/SSD+in+Optical+Drive+Bay , i'm warried about buy Adapter and the SSD for 120€ and use it as SATA 1. Do you think that using this adapter http://www.amazon.it/dp/B00F23Y2BS/?tag=tonymacx86com-21 i'll solve the problem ?

EDIT 2:

new info,SSD Crucial M500 probably solve the problem:

The adaptor looks like it should work - I suggest reading through the latest feedback to see that people are happy and that there is no speed reduction mentioned or any other possible issues. The feedback looks good but my Italian is not great - make sure that you are happy. ;)

Overall if you have done your homework on this then it will minimize any further issues. Let us know how you progress.

hi,

ive played around with imacs before taking the hackintosh route, simply because I was not going to for out 3.500 $ for a 5k iMac - so i built my own.. anyway back to your problem.

have started my journey with 24 inch imacs and run into this problem several times.

basically, as far as i know, its the SSD and compatibility with iMac hardware.
if you try different brand of SSD you might get full SATA 2 speed.
Ive googled this in the past, from memory its Sandforce based SSDs that dont achieve full speed on imac 24 inch.

so yea. pulling an imac into bits and to find this at the end simply sucks! but thats how it goes.

One other thing i wanted to mention, Apple quality control etc. its kinda ****ty. my last imac was 27 inch 2011 model and it only had a Western Digitial Black SATA 2 hard drive on a SATA 3 interfance.
where is the bloody quality control? i put an OCZ 256GB SSD into it and it went full SATA 3 - thats the imac that i sold and it funded 90% of the 4k Imac hackintosh i built :)

Fortunately i bought a Crucial M550 256Gb SSD, placed as the first drive (with a 3.5>2.5 adapter) going to full SATA2, and replaced the SuperDrive with a 2,5" HDD! I know... SATA2 it's not so fast, but it's faster than ever, so when i'll replace this mac with a hackintosh ( obviously :p) i can recycle at least the SSD.
