Hello - newbie with first post here! :?:

Is there any practical reason why Linux will not install satisfactorily on Apple hardware?
Here's some background:-

My REAL problem is that having installed a new hard drive in my old iMac I cannot now add an Apple operating system. Trying to start the machine with Cmd - R does NOT bring up the Mac OSX Disk Utility and my attempts to use my original set-up disk (Leopard) or my purchased Snow Leopard disk have failed. :banghead:

Is it hold down COmmand+C or just C when booting to boot from CD-ROM?
Also, on the mint forums you asked about wifi, in ubuntu based derivatives, this MIGHT help. (run in terminal)
$ sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall
Taken from HERE

Also, do not include $ in command line at terminal.
It is usually the most easily done way of no brainer installing proprietary drivers. I just prefer this method. Might want to go grab a coffee.

PLEASE NOTE, back up install on something, or install to a USB stick the same OS and test it on that boot method to confirm this will not BORK your install. linux doesn't always recover gracefully form such borks should one occur.

Asking about installing Linux onto Apple hardware on a site dedicated to installing Apple operating systems onto non-Apple hardware is all pretty strange regardless.

I had a notion that folk here might be somewhat more computer savvy than on some of the other forums I've looked at!

In particular, I thought someone here MIGHT know why I was unable to install OS X (any!) onto my Apple iMac.

Anyone with time to spare may like to look here for other background: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8544819

It hardly matters now. My attempted repair of my graphics card failed, so the machine is now of no more use. I shall revert to using one of my old PCs for experimental purposes.

My thanks to 'ripperzane' for his/her attempt to help. :)
