sounds like something is wrong with Avahi, if you're using it. Did you try restarting the server, or at least checking its logs?

Iv tried restarting the server multiple time, still not luck

I have also check the syslog and this is what I get when I try to connect to the Time capsule

Code:

any ideas where to look ?

A unix signal (#11 = segmentation fault) plus the "netatalk_panic" means the process died because of an invalid condition. I suggest you try a newer version of Avahi and netatalk, I know Ubuntu is pretty far behind, the newer ones are 3.x

I have a question to y'all:

I know netatalk worked fine with OS X 10.9 but now with 10.10 (Yosemite) I can access the files though the finder, but it isn't working with TimeMachine.

Do you know a fix for that issue? I really would like to use my ubuntu server as a TimeMachine backup!

Thanks!

firstly thanks for this  !!

can any one direct me to what i should to check to see where its failing ?

Probably too late for this reply but here's what worked for me. From this location: http://dae.me/blog/1660/concisest-guide-to-setting-up-time-machine-server-on-ubuntu-server-12-04/

If you use Mavericks/Yosemite and you get “Check the server name or IP address, and then try again” error, run the following on your server:
cd /usr/lib/netatalk
sudo mv uams_dhx2.so uams_dhx2.so.broken
sudo ln -s uams_dhx2_passwd.so uams_dhx2.so
sudo service netatalk restart
