Two. I just can't work without my dual-monitors, both at home and at work. Except for laptops, I haven't used a desktop computer with a single monitor since... hmmm.... since around 1994.

I currently have two 24" Samsung SyncMaster SA850 Monitors and a small 19" Dell connected to my laptop.

I am going to be getting a third 24" Samsung so i can use triple support when gaming.

Also going to have large Screen for viewing films on as well, when writing for media

I love having two displays because Pro Tools and Logic both have support for multiple windows. I have not worked with one in a long while and I could imagine having to again either

I have a couple of different desktop systems. My main system has a triple Asus 27" monitor setup 5760x1080. I also have two other systems that use a single 27" 2560x1440 display respectively.

I'm thinking about getting a single 4K monitor or UHDTV. There is an upcoming Seiki 39" 4K UHDTV SE39UY04 which will supposedly go for ~$699 USD. As well as an upcoming Seiki 65" 4K to round out the current 50" Seiki SE50UY04 (~$1300 to ~$1500).

From what I've read in the [H] forums of users of the SE50UY04 as well as other forums, the SE50UY04 will do 3840 x 2160 @ 30Hz which isn't great for gaming but should be fine for many desktop applications. Presumably the SE50UY04 will also do 2560x1440 at 80Hz which should be a great all around performer.

Hopefully the upcoming Seiki 39" 4K UHDTV SE39UY04 will be able to do something similar at a lower price.

I think I would prefer a quasi 40" 2560x1440 @ 80Hz / 40" 3840x2160 @ 30Hz to a typical 27" 1920x1080 or 27" 2560x1440,.....maybe even prefer it to a 5760x1080 triple 27" monitor setup,...

***edit***

I don't know anything about this seller so I'm not recommending it. I'm just providing the link for reference to the model and for an indication of availability:

Look at those specs closer, its only 30hz at 4k res over HDMI, that would give such migraines if u used it for long periods.

I'm well aware of the specs. Typically a Seiki UHDTV will presumably do:

3840x2160 (8 megapixel)@ 30hz
2560x1440 (4 megapixel)@ 60hz
1920x1080 (2 megapixel)@ 120hz
1280x720 (1 megapixel)@ 200hz

Monitors and TV units of today don't work the same way as older tube technology. 30Hz doesn't creat screen flicker and strobing on modern displays so you are incorrect in your assumption with associating it with likely ill effects.

For what its worth, I bought a Seiki 39" 4K UHDTV for ~$498.99 off of Amazon. The price dropped afterwards, albeit only briefly, to ~$409 so I was going to return it or see about price matching. Although I very much liked the display I ended-up giving it to my sister to use as just a TV. Holiday season and all,..... :)

~40" was a bit too big for my desk and I have really grown accustomed to my triple 27" monitor setup. Also HDMI 2.0 has been ratified and is already showing up in the market.

I've heard Dell will be releasing a 27" 4K display for under $1000 USD in early 2014 so I might jump on that unless perhaps Seiki or some other company makes a 4K UHDTV a little smaller.

Anyway, 30Hz isn't that bad for everyday desktop use IMO. I hardly noticed it personally.

Edit:

I just realized in the post you were referring to I already mentioned that it was 30Hz at 3840x2160.

i use 2 monitors with the GTX760 but I'm getting a 3rd monitor because I'm running out of space on both monitors also i use to use a 47inch TV connected to my hack but I've gone off the idea of using that now so I'm going with 3 monitors what about you Tonymacx86?

using the 3rd display there for parallels

On all my systems I use 2 monitors.
I tried with one large display and even TV, but it is definitely better with multiple displays.

On my main system I use 2x27" displays, my other systems use 2x24" and 2x22". My laptop uses a 17.3" ws and a 19" 4:3 making it so much easier to work than with just one large display.

If I had more desktop area, I'd probably even go for 3 displays, but 2 are definitely better than one, specially for photoshop, programming, transcribing, watching something on one display while working on the other, heavy research and other advantages I cannot think of at this particular moment.

Bad idea: while waiting for my monitors to arrive, I used my 42" HDTV as a monitor. At 1080p, you would thjnk it is awesome for work, but it makes you squint too much from a distance, and burns your retinas when up close. However, it was great as a htpc display, or a preview monitor when placed at a reasonable distance to preview edited videos, but not so much as a workstation monitor.

Why did. I do something silly like that? Because I had the same question you had: is it best to have a large display, or multiple good-sized monitors. There you go, my answer: multiple displays.
