How do I upgrade from Snow Leopard 10.6.8. to Mavericks?

Hi everyone, I was wanting to know if and how I can upgrade to Mavericks from Snow Leopard 10.6.8, without losing my current data on the drive. I don't want to erase the drive and install Mavericks fresh. Can someone please let me know if it's possible without making my current setup unbootable or causing other problems?
