HELP Updating From El Capitan to Catalina

I have been trying to update my OS from El Capitan to Catalina. I run a ASUS ROG Maximus IX Hero Motherboard and
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 4GB GPU.

I can download it from the app store and when the computer resets to clover I choose "boot mac os from install" but it stops on a full loading bar and I have to reset the computer in order to boot back into my main system drive.

Any help on how to update El Capitan to Catalina would be greatly appreciated.

There are no Catalina drivers for a GTX 960.

Thanks for responding, Thats OK I have a GTX 1060 that should work? I just don't know if I can update directly from El Capitan to Catalina or if I do a fresh install
