Hey Guys!

So, I've been wondering what my options are for a super video editing machine and time after time I've been told that a custom mackintosh is the way to go!

The only thing is, i do have basic technical knowledge on components but not enough that i would trust myself to pick and choose the right build.

So this is why I'm here, i was wondering if you could please help me out here, I was thinking, if its not too much to ask if you guys could give me 2 or 3 build options,

The First Build Option - Budget-less, the beast, only performance in mind!

The Second Build Option - Son of the beast, performance heavy. $2000-3000 (I don't know how much it would cost for a custom mackintosh of this caliber so if the price given above doesn't work please disregard it!) , must perform better than a 2013 Macbook Pro W/ Retina 2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 Turbo Boost upto 3.8GHz, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3

The Thrid Build, Cheapest of all, still a strong build that can handle heavy work

I recommend that you start of by having a good look in the buyers guide. The CustoMac Pro is as high a spec as you would require, but there are other options. Go for one of the higher 84w max TDP i7 processors (built for desktop performance rather than mobile battery life).
There will be a new Guide out on Wednesday but many of the older model graphics options have been discontinued but the new replacements have not hit the shops yet.

Thanks for this info too... I'm also building a machine for editing video (4k). I might wait and see what comes out Wednesday, kinda want something a little more spruced up than what's on the Dec. guide... Been eyeing all of the x99 / Haswell E i7 build forums... Looks like best option so far but maybe a bit beyond my abilities...

First off - a warm welcome to you. Secondly can I just point out that I think you missed the date of this thread - its almost a year old. ;)

Here is some information for you to have a look at - I recommend reading through the comments properly as there will be plenty of good information that you can use to shape your purchase decisions. Invest some time in the planning stage, and remember that the situation is maturing on X99 hardware.

Both of the above threads started in October and November respectively but it is worth reading all the way through instead of only the last few pages.

Ha- I did read the date wrong... Guessing no buying guide is coming out tmw then :p -Thanks for all the info! I'm researching hard before clicking that buy button!

The biggest decision you need to make is not actually the hardware, but the software you are going to use.

If you use Final Cut Pro X, you will need to go with AMD based GPU's to get the best out of it. The nVidia cards are brilliant cards but sadly they are not or rather FCP X is not optimised to use them. Whilst FCP will work, you will get slow renders.

Once you've made your call on the software, that decides the class of GPUs, either AMD or Nvidia. The rest is how much money you want to spend.

I've use a standard 4790K (not over clocked), twin Gigabyte 280X 3GB Vapour-X cards and a Gigabyte Z97X UD5H. Pretty simple install to be honest and as fast as hell with FCP X.

Two graphics cars tends to meet big heavy PSU's as well. You also really need a bigger case for the air flow which costs more.

Make your decision on the video software, the rest just flows.

Rob,

Hi rwillet - I was just curious. I believe I had read that the R9 280X worked out of the box in Mavericks. Are you using them with Yosemite?

Also, have you run the Bruce X benchmark in FCP X with those cards installed? Just curious what the time is.

Thanks for your time
