Mine does not have a switch. Can you tell by looking at the circuit board what the switch does? Does it cut the 3rd pin of the second plug as stated in the previous post?

Unfortunately, I can' t see what the switch does from looking at it.
All the info I can find on this on the web points back to this post here on an HP site: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-.../655065-hp-elitebook-8560p-wont-shutdown.html

Apparently, there's a SATA diagnostic pin which is connected by default, but must be disconnected in certain models of HP laptops to avoid this problem. There's two posted photos on that site of the circuit board pins, but you need to be a member of that forum to view them. I couldn't find more info anywhere else- in fact, every other mention of this I managed to find pointed to that thread.

If it helps anyone, this is the drive caddy I used from Amazon and it DOES have the white switch that once pushed toward the connectors solves this issue.

Also, for anyone wondering what to do with their DVD drive once you replace it with a drive caddy, get yourself one of these for $8:

Comes with a new faceplate that fits it since you'll probably be using the original with the drive caddy. Stick it in a drawer so when the day comes you ever do need to burn or watch a DVD you'll have your optical drive.

When I first tried to play a DVD in the external, I had an error where DVD player said no valid DVD drive. The fix for that if it happens is in this thread: http://www.tonymacx86.com/mountain-...rive-could-not-found-70012-mountain-lion.html

Where are the link to the pictures? I can't find the white switch.

The switch is next to the Sata Port in the Caddy. Mine needs to be moved to the right for HP Support.
