I'm not sure if this has been going on for a while and I just didn't notice, or if something has changed. My hard drive reports double the usage after sleep. If I reboot, it restores to normal. I've done a search, but found nothing specific. I've also tried Disk Utility's First Aid on the drive but it reported no errors.

Any ideas of what might be happening?

Can it be "sleepimage"?

Also, why is there only 300GB capacity on your 1TB drive?

I don't know. I don't know about how sleepimage works. Is that a known problem that a "sleep image" is being created and then not eliminated? Also, not sure why it would be apron 160GB. I thought the sleep image was just the size of your ram (8GB in my case).

That would be a 300GB partition.

Yeah. I shouldn't be 160GB...

Have you tried checking About this Mac > Storage > Manage... to see what large files there are?

Why does your 1TB drive only show 300GB capacity?

It doesn't. That is just and APFS container. That's how APFS partitions look in Disk Utility. Here is the full drive

As to Storage, there are no large files (Photos is actually on a different drive). After sleep you get this weirdness, note the "System Data":

After a reboot, it looks like this:
