Update
SJ, What does the "State is:" line mean exactly? As you can see mine is "Powered Off", but I'm using it as I type!

"State" applies to the Manager one line above, not to the chip itself. If the chip is off, the tester won't find it at all. If it's on, the output says "turned on", if your chip doesn't support lowEnergy, the Manager's state will be Unknown, Unsupported, Power Off, etc. The output of the tester is in increasing order of specificity as you read down: basic state, hardware state, higher-level (software) state, specific test setup, specific test result

From a GMYLE 4.0 Bluetooth Adaptor

Low Energy supported, Power Change supported
Using Peripheral Manager, Mavericks or higher
State is: Powered On

From an IOGear 4.0 Bluetooth Dongle

Low Energy supported, Power Change supported
Using Peripheral Manager, Mavericks or higher
State is: Powered On

Does this ensure compatibility with the Handoff feature, or does it just check whether it is technically compatible in terms of hardware? Might the feature disallow these dongles as they are not vanilla, even though they have the LE technology?

Cheers

If you get a usb dongle that supports low energy will the computer then support airdrop from Mac to iOS?

No, at least not yet. I imagine a mod will come around to enable that and likely handoff. That may just be wishful thinking though.

Too bad. Am I alone thinking that the fact that you can use AirDrop and Handoff only if you have Bluetooth 4.0 is just a reason to make people buy a new Mac? I can't imagine how this makes a technical difference. You should be even able to have AirDrop without Bluetooth at all.

Well, BT4 is more secure, more power efficient, and better at dealing with device discovery. There could be a whole myriad of reasons why only BTLE is supported.
