Thanks for the wonderful site and all the valuable info. This is my first Hackintosh build. I am a Linux geek and long time Windows developer, but wanted a newer OSX machine to add to my arsenal. I still have an early 2009 Mac Mini running El Capitan that is getting long in the tooth, but I haven’t used OSX regularly for a few years. Hopefully this build description will help someone else looking for a similar middle of the road "value" build.

All parts listed were selected from the "Buyers Guide" on this site for compatibility purposes. Click here for up-to-date part links on Newegg and Amazon: http://www.tonymacx86.com/buyersguide/july/2016. The build cost me ~$719 USD.

My goals were as follows:
  1. Teach my son how to build a computer.
  2. Build a system that was Hackintosh-friendly using the current Buyer's Guide on this site.
  3. The system will need to be used for a wide variety of tasks (photo management/editing, video editing, gaming, internet browsing, audio editing etc.)
  4. Keep the budget low, but not with any major sacrifices. SSD and discrete GPU were a must, as was at least 16GB RAM.
  5. Reuse some parts we already had (large 3TB HDD, monitor, 2.1 speakers, and external DVD burner).
As expected, the Realtek ALC1150 audio and Ethernet adapter didn’t work out-of-the-box, and there were a few other quirks, but these issues were all easily solved using the methods shared below shared by the trailblazers on this site.

Installing the optional TPLINK WiFi adapter made the installation a little easier until Ethernet was working and will give me OS X WiFi should I ever need it.

I am currently running Clover SMBIOS system set to "iMac14,2" but am considering changing to "iMac17,1" since that seems to recommended for Skylake builds. As expected, I experience the blank screen when I try booting with iMac17,1 option temporarily in Clover. I see a fix for this, but not sure if it is worth the trouble since the machine is flawless for me right now. I would like to know if there is any evidence that shows this will make the machine perform better, use less power etc. Please comment if you can provide actual concrete evidence on why I should change.

What works?
Everything that I have tested thus far! (WiFi, Ethernet, audio, USB 3, headphone jack, GPU acceleration, shutdown/restart, sleep/resume short and long term, App Store, USB Mic, Optical drive). The system is very stable and has never crashed. I am very happy with this configuration.

What doesn’t work?
Nothing that I know of! Still testing...

I don’t use iMessage, so I haven’t tried that. I’m sure it can be made to work using the normal methods suggested on this site.


Installation Notes

BIOS Settings
(DEL to enter using USB keyboard)
Load optimized defaults first, then:
  • Set EFI Boot = On (default to EFI boot)
  • Set Secure Boot = Off
  • Set Fast Boot = Off
  • Set Virtualization VT-d = Disabled
  • Set ErP = Enabled - this is necessary to allow shutdown to work properly, i.e. not reboot seconds after shutdown. ErP Support determines whether to let the system consume less than 1W of power in S5 (shutdown) state. When the setting is enabled, the following four functions will become unavailable: PME Event Wake Up, Power On By Mouse, Power On By Keyboard, and Wake On LAN.
  • Set OS Type to “Other”
  • Set IO SerialPort to Disabled
  • Set XHCI Handoff to Enabled

Unibeast Installer
16GB USB3 stick - created and used Unibeast per the recommended instructions:

  • Used front case USB3 port to boot. Use F12 to select a boot drive.
  • Used vanilla process to get initial system installed.
  • I did not need to disable NVIDIA card using the bootloader parameter nv_disable=1, but it won't work by default (more on that later).
  • WiFi works out-of-box so you can download whatever you need for the rest of the install.

Multibeast Post-Install
  • Used MultiBeast for El Capitan 8.2.3
  • Take the defaults and only Install the Clover bootloader to internal SSD only (some other options may be mandatory, but you can’t uncheck them)
  • Do NOT install ALC1150 audio as suggested in the Installation Guide.

Audio Hack - Realtek ALC1150
  • No audio drivers should have been installed by Multibeast as per instructions above.
  • Backup stock OSX AppleHDA.kext just in case. It is located in in /S/L/E (/System/Library/Extensions folder)
  • Mount EFI Partition - Clover Configurator can do this and there is also some scripts and command line commands that can it as well.
  • Download and run audio command script by toleda (audio_cloverALC-110_v1.0r10.command) https://github.com/toleda/audio_CloverALC (directions at the bottom)
  • In System Preferences/Sound, choose “Internal Speakers” as “Output”
  • Reboot and you should have sound, but only until the computer sleeps (see CodecCommander.kext below to fix sleep issue below).

Video Driver

  • Nvidia Web Driver - download from Nvidia
  • Used WebDriver-346.03.10f02.pkg http://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/n...cs-drivers-for-os-x-10-11-5-346-03-10.193172/)
  • Clover config.plist add boot argument nvda_drv=1
  • Reboot
  • The Nvidia control panel always says it is using the Default OS X Default Graphics Driver, but it lies. I don’t show the Nvidia icon on the menu bar because it doesn’t appear to work, at least for me.

Kexts
realtekALC.kext
  • This kext gets installed to [EFI Partition]/EFI/Clover/Kext/10.11/ (I believe the audio_cloverALC-110_v1.0r10.command installed it here)
AtherosE2200Ethernet.kext
CodecCommander.kext (to prevent audio loss after sleep)
Run the following command to update kext cache and then reboot:
sudo kextcache -Boot -U /
(You may need to run the command a couple times. Run until it returns without any issues.)


Generated a SSDT for CPU Power Management
Turbo states worked before I did this, but single core performance seemed to fair better afterwards.

Update - July 26, 2016
Some things to report since the initial build and install. The system continues to be very stable, it has never crashed or failed to boot.

TRIM
Enabled TRIM support for the Samsung SSD.

From a Terminal session:
Code:
sudo trimforce enable

A reboot is required after enabling TRIM support. To confirm that it is working, check the status in About this Mac/System Report.../SATA Devices. Click on the Samsung SSD 850 EVO device on the right and note that TRIM support is now enabled.

Clonezilla Disk Imaging
Being a Linux geek, I decided not to purchase an Apple specific backup utility to supplement the Time Machine backups. At first I was tempted to purchase SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner since they seemed to be OS X staples for many. I'm sure they are great products from what I have read. But, after doing some research, I found that Clonezilla would be best for me since this single utility can clone/image OS X disks just like it can for Linux and Windows. I also found that the aforementioned OS X specific backup utilities don't actually backup the bootloader EFI partition. Their "bootable" recovery drives actually need to have a bootloader installed manually onto the cloned drive. While this is a non-issue for many, and is easy to do post-backup, there is an extra step to to get Clover installed and properly configured to boot the OS. And, since I prefer to use network storage as backup media for disk images, Clonezilla is a better and simpler option for me. And, it is free![/SIZE]
  1. Download Clonezilla and create a bootable USB flash drive (follow the instructions at http://clonezilla.org/). I used the 64-bit (AMD64) alternative Ubuntu-based version.
  2. Boot from USB (F12 at BIOS screen, choose Clonezilla USB device)
  3. Follow their instructions to clone your disk in the preferred manner. In Clonezilla, I mount my Samba share on my fileserver and clone my SSD disk image to network, just like I can do for Linux and Windows machines. Restoring is just as easy. If you should ever need to, simply restore the disk image of your choice and you have your whole rig back up and running again in no time. Since it backs up the EFI partition as well, there is nothing to do after the restore.
  4. Properly shutdown Clonezilla and remove the USB flash drive.
  5. Reboot into OSX as normal.

Upgrade to 10.11.6
10.11.5 has been very stable for me, but what is the use of having an OS that cannot be upgraded to include the latest security patches etc.? The update from 10.11.5 to 10.11.6 was simple and non-eventful on this system.

Steps taken:
  1. Cloned entire disk with Clonezilla and triggered Time Machine to do a current backup (just in case!).
  2. Installed 10.11.6 via the App Store, it will reboot and install the update. There is no need to change any Clover boot flags before booting back into OSX. Nvidia acceleration will not be enabled when it boots after the update, as will be witnessed by the tearing/glitching during the logon sequence.
  3. Update the NVIDIA Web Driver to the latest version using System Preferences (346,03.15f02 at the time of this writing). The NVIDIA Driver Manager will prompt you to update and will state that the current driver is not supported for the version of the OS. After the new NVIDIA Web Driver is installed, it will require one more reboot.
No issues to report thus far. Sounds still works, TRIM is still enabled.


Update - August 9, 2016
Removed the GTX 950 and replaced it with a GTX 970. I will post updated benchmarks when I get a chance. Heaven 4.0 bench should be much more impressive, Geekbench 32-bit is likely not affected. System is still super stable and running well with the new card.

As promised in my August 9 update, I have provided the updated Heaven benchmark for the GTX 970 in the first post (for comparison with the GTX 950 it replaced). Sure, I would have loved to pickup a GTX 1060 6GB, but it isn't supported yet. I'm content with being on the older/proven/stable Kepler architecture. For pushing out 1920x1080, this card is all we will need.

Total system cost is now around $850 with the GTX 970. System is still very quiet and stable, I have noticed no sound increase with the GTX 970 versus the GTX 950. Price/performance very good with this card, and it works perfectly with OSX. We paid $279 for the card on Amazon, but the price on Amazon is now back up to $335 for some reason, strange. Newegg still offers the card for $279.

I didn't realize that someone was using this name for a build, sorry about that. This just happened to be the hostname my son and happened to think up when we were building it (Hackintosh + Unibeast/Multibeast became HackinBeast!). I'll rename it to something different here when I get a chance and can decide on a more suitable name, know that I know a true "Hackinbeast" is actually out there! Are you still using the machine? Talk about future proofing...

Hi, I didn't realize that someone was using this name for a build, sorry about that. This just happened to be the hostname my son and happened to think up when we were building it (Hackintosh + Unibeast/Multibeast became HackinBeast!). I'll rename it to something different here when I get a chance and can decide on a more suitable name, know that I know a true "Hackinbeast" is actually out there! Are you still using the machine? Talk about future proofing...

you could always change your name to GrannyHackBeast seeing as your rig is 4.5 years old and can only go up to 10.8.5? :p
 
Thanks everyone. Since this is a "value" build (and since I already have an "econo" build), I decided to go with "HackinWorth". Perhaps not the sexiest of names, but it will properly represent what this build is all about...building a modern Skylake rig that performs well for just about any task, but without breaking the bank.
 
Hi, have almost exact same setup except CPU and Graphic card. By now not yet done the ssdt step and have some strage issue like described with sound, but it does not disappear on sleep. It disappears eventually and can be brought back by going to sleep and back. My cpu is i5 6400K, was interested if this bug is possible due to not having ssdt for the clover, previously failed doing one and just thought i'll do it later. Also wanted to say thank you man, this thread saved me some time.
