Comments (original build)

I decided to replace my iMac for my video editing needs, since it was constantly struggling with the heat produced by the components. I pretty quickly decided to build a Hackintosh, which I wanted to be quiet, fast and reliable. This is also the reason why I have gone with an Ivy Bridge over a Haswell System. The only Haswell board in my budget, which I could have gotten, where I live, would have been the GA-Z87-HD3. Sadly I have seen several reports of this board struggling with PCI configuration errors, white boot screens etc. This is why I chose the DS3H and the slightly slower and older 3770K. Additionally I went with the GTX 670 over the 760, simply because it has more CUDA-cores and cost less money (and is way faster in my case, since it's a factory overclocked card, including a MASSIVE cooler) at the time I bought it. (I got mine for ca. 50$ than any stock GTX 760.)

For cooling I use a BeQuiet cooler (I couldn't find it on Amazon nor Newegg, for some reason). The thing looks really sharp and also cools very well for the money. I idle at temps around 30°C, sometimes lower - not reaching more than 54°C at full load, when the room is at 20-23°C. I am also planning to overclock, which will work fine with this system - hence the Z77 platform.

The system runs super fast and stably. I had no issues whatsoever configuring it - actually just as simple as doing a clean install on a real Mac. Installing Windows on a secondary partition of my data hard drive was more tricky, though (I find this ironical, since OS X isn't meant to work on these things, but Windows made me struggle more :D).

Oh - and did I mention it plays games like a champ? I can play the Battlefield 4 Open Beta at maxed settings with 60FPS vsynced! Same for Crysis 2, Battlefield 3 and whatever else you throw at it under Windows. Mac games play well too, on the other hand (Borderlands 2 maxed with super smooth FPS). The 3D performance of the Zotac GTX 670 AMP! matches and tops stock GTX 680s. You could overclock the thing even further for even more bang for the buck, thanks to a massive custom cooler. ;)[

All Adobe CC apps work on the build, just as well as Final Cut Pro X, which is my go-to NLE in most cases. Aperture is flawless too, for those who like to take photos, like me...

Update: Now running at a stable 4.3GHz, the machine just flies!

Edit/Note: Overclock even hight now, Geekbench reaches up to 16900 at stable 4.4GHz

What works:
- EVERYTHING everything I tested to far (full graphics acceleration, Open CL/CUDA; sound; network; USB2/3; sleep (I had to turn of password after sleep, or else it does not work); TRIM; dual boot via second drive shared with scratch files (Win8).

What needs more work:
- can't wake from sleep when the login password is activated after wake; other people have had the same problem, to my knowledge. FIXED! Works fine with OS X Mavericks

Now running Yosemite 10.10.3
