you need to run as root. do a sudo <command>
also have you checked this?

https://github.com/wmchris/DellXPS15-9550-OSX/blob/master/4k_sector.md

Hm yeah tried sudo too. Okay here is the my problem:

- apt-get install nvme-cli and smartmontools
- sudo fdisk -l
- sudo smartctl -a /dev/nvme0n1/
-> ERROR: /dev/nvme0n1: Unable to detect device type
Please specify device type with the -d option

Since this is only to determine wether the SSD has the vanilla sector size I think I can skip this BUT then:

- sudo nvme format -l 1 /dev/nvme0n1/
-> ERROR: NVME Admin Command error:INVALID_Format(210a)

That guide says Samsung SSD's are not supported, but my Spectre uses a Samsung MZVLW256HEHP-000H1 - so no support?

yes, that's what I heard that samsung SSDs' do not support 4K sector. I have Hynix in my spectre x360 15".

What are the actual benefits of 4k block size anyways?

Efficiency.
I expect Samsung will eventually move to 4k, especially as NVMe SSDs get larger.

I can't seem to get past booting the Sierra install.

HP x360 Spectre 13-w023dx
i7-7500U

Though it hasn't mattered since I haven't gotten that far, it's my intention to install this on a Samsung T3 500GB portable ssd.

I've tried a number of different thumbdrives in case they were the issue.

ESC-F9 doesn't show the Sierra install partition. It saw the Linux partition but no Sierra. Secure Boot is disabled as is virtualization.

Searching hasn't revealed anyone else having this issue.

What should I check next? I'm not sure how to proceed.
