[Guide] Intel NUC7/NUC8 using Clover UEFI (NUC7i7Bxx,NUC8i7Bxx,etc)

Hi Leesureone I see that you have made a lot of progress with the NUC8 series. I decided to see if I could do the Open Core system and get it up and running with your latest 7.6 EFI. I was successful and pleased that it worked well (I worked out the details and did not sabotage myself by doing a dual boot setup). My current question is about the WiFi not working with my Big Sur install using the 7.6 EFI that you uploaded. It seems to work well, but I don't have the Ethernet port and WiFi working for some reason. The Bluetooth is working. BT is weak (as can be expected) but it does work. Do you know some common mistakes that I may have made that would cause the Ethernet/WiFi problem? There may be a problem with the USB port operating upon waking up from sleep. I going to check that further.

Hey @macdude007. Wifi may not be working because the WIFI kext I used is for Monterey, there is a version for Big Sur available here you can download.

Ethernet not functioning is an unusual issue, again you can try a different kext than the one I used available here. Make sure to change the config.plist/ kext section to change the name so it loads properly.

Reset the NVRAM after each change to make sure they are loaded. To be safe back up your important data and use a thumb drive to make the changes on first.

If ethernet still doesn't work some users have changed the setting for it in System Preferences/ Network/ Ethernet and switched form Configure: Automatically to Manual and then Speed: 1000baseT. Save the changes and see.

I looked at using Carbon Copy Cloner to backup my Big Sur and found that there is an issue with Apple requiring something called ASR. "All on its own, Big Sur introduced a significant new change to the creation of an external boot device. The operating system now resides on a cryptographically sealed "Signed System Volume"(link is external) that can only be copied by an Apple-proprietary utility, "Apple Software Restore" (ASR)." This is a new one on me and I just discovered that Big Sur may have issues with being backed up by CCC or SuperDuper! which might make Catalina a better choice for now. There are some problems with Apple's implementation of this new change to macos that need to be considered. Are many of the guys staying with Catalina to avoid this or does it look like they are moving on up to Big Sur and Monterey? I like being able to make a bootable backup. My main Hac (UD5H) is still running Yosemite and it is time to move on to a newer OS. What are your thoughts?

Hi everyone, been running Mojave for over a year on clover, and I was wondering if anyone knows of it's safe to update to the latest OS over standard updates. some of my software is starting to get OS limits. Just curious if I have to do a clean clover and OS install on my NUCi5. thanks for any insights

I'd recommend switching to the Open Core boot loader. Clover may be a little easier to configure in older versions of OSx but moving into Big Sur it requires parts of Open Core to work anyway. There are uploads on page 89 here which support the latest releases including Monterey.

Hi all, has anyone run into issues with their NUC becoming unresponsive to mouse and keyboard input every so often? The mouse/keyboard freeze up for a few seconds, then work for a second, and then freeze again. Remote access via Screen Sharing also fails to work in this state.

This behavior starts about 10min or so after booting and the only recovery is to reboot. I can't tie it down to any specific running process - the machine locks up even if nothing else other than a web browser is running. Resources are totally fine - plenty of RAM (32GB installed) and SSD space. The SSD is also not impacted by the SSD controller bug that some vendors/models exhibit mentioned further up this thread (confirmed with boot time tests). I dual boot with Windows 11, and Windows runs totally fine and stable, so also I don't think it's hardware related.

Any logs I should be looking at?

The most recent change on the hack was to update OC to 7.6 and an in place upgrade to Monterey 12.1 from Big Sur.
The machine was stable for at least 3 weeks post upgrade so I don't think it's related to that, but just in case. NUC8i7BEH.

Different hard drives for Windows and Monterey? I know Windows is running smooth but it sounds like a hardware issue.
