I think the USB was in the USB3 port.. let me try in a USB2 port now..

Posting from mobile phone: installing now. Use of USB3 port was the issue.

Back on laptop, running El Capitan. And finally Notes is syncing with my iPhone again. Thanks Rahab Man for your help. I'm surprised it just ran as an upgrade btw, didn't give the option for clean install as with previous versions. Oh well, this is better.

Clean install is accomplished by building a USB, erasing the target partition before installing.

I see, so is it that during installation it looks for an existing OS X installation and, if it finds one, it upgrades that to El Capitan, if it can't find one, it does a clean install?

Hmmm.. Think I spoke too soon. Realised I had no sound so, as per the guide in post #1, I re-ran the probook installer, repaired permissions.. Restarted and.. Stuck with this:

EDIT: i guess you need me to boot in verbose mode. Let me do that now..
