[Guide] Avoid APFS conversion on High Sierra update or fresh install

I don't use kexts in /s/l/e or /l/e
I can spare the 5 more seconds it takes to load my 4 "hackintosh" kexts from EFI :)

Inside "Install macOS High Sierra.app", you find Contents/SharedSupport/BaseSystem.dmg.
If you mount BaseSystem.dmg, you find System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist.
Inside the plist is the build/version info.
Thank you RehabMan ;)

The upgrade method worked great. Once you make those changes to the installer (fresh install) will the procedure have to be done again if that installer that was modified used on another mac or is that change good for all fresh installs now?

Edited:

That might have been a dumb question because now I think I realize the actually installer is a DMG (installESD) file that will not keep changes if mounted and edited.

Nothing in post #1 involves making any changes to the installer.

I just edited my post above.

This process doesn't even make changes there.

The only change is to minstallconfig.xml which is a file in a directory used only during the install process.
After the install is complete, the entire directory structure (/macOS Install Data) is deleted.

i may wipe and reinstall and use this guide to not use the APFS system

unless there is a way to convert back?
Converting back to HFS+ requires a fresh install.

Can we convert to AFPS later if we choose not to using this method? Or will that require a fresh install as well?

You can use startosinstall with "--converttoapfs YES" to convert an existing install of 10.13 from HFS+J to APFS.
