got a new headset and audio stopped working

I haven't used my hackintosh for about a year. I last remembered audio working fine on it with a USB headset, and that's the only thing that's changed since I last touched this rig. I picked up a hyperx cloud stinger headset (its not a usb one) and now I have no input/output devices found in sys preferences/sound. tried restarting and unplugging/replugging

audio codec: alc887 I think
os version; 10.12.2

if someone could point me in the right direction to get my audio working again id appreciate it much
