Cripes.
Bit like reading Russian (no offence meant to Russian speakers/readers!) when all you know about is Latin characters.

Other Ideas, based on the image, kextcache 64bit etc:
- So, perhaps...crash due to background task of periodic cache rebuild. Not perhaps iTunes*
- Do you have anything in /S/L/E that's not vanilla? Perhaps a bad kext causing problem.
- I guess you are booting 64bit? Try booting in 32bit mode.

* Or..its still just random stuff and is h/w related...
Could check RAM config in BIOS, presume you use SPD detect, and that it's sat at 1333MHz default right now, and (perhaps importantly) has picked up the right latency timings appropriate for 1333, as opposed to ones for 1600. But I am sure there must be others here using same RAM as you, so kind of doubt there's something generically bad going on.

Seems my memory GSkill slower version: F3-10666CL8D-4GBRM

OK I've had this machine running fine from a cold boot for about 2 hours, no weirdness yet - I only have one of the original 2 sticks of ram in there (for a total of 1 stick @ 2GB), so I am leaning towards this being a memory issue - but now I have figure out if I can fix the issue.. :problem:

to answer your questions:

Ithe itunes crash could have been what you were describing, but would that affect other programs? safari cashed soon after (I should dig up the log I guess)

no additional kexts in S/L/E other than what the installer put there.

tried 32 bit many times, no change in stability

I will check the settings for SPD detect

"The itunes crash could have been what you were describing, but would that affect other programs? safari cashed soon after (I should dig up the log I guess)"

..well if it were some problem causing panic to the kextcache app when rebuilding caches.. that could occur anytime that OSX decides to rebuild the cache, which is does from time to time, although I am not sure what else triggers that other than when it detects a change to files in /S/L/E.

But as you've got nothing "different" in /S/L/E, probably not something like a bad kext etc.

Well, I guess it's been some hours since your post, so hopefully it's still working and is narrowed down to RAM/memory config issues with just the hard part on how to resolve that!

well call me a quitter but I got fed up with trying to figure out what combination of ram settings would give a stable build, I went out and got a P55M-UD4 and have that up and running right now with 4GB of ram and it SEEMS ok.

I did not buy new ram - I would like to get this Gskill ram going simply because I bought 8BG of the stuff, (have only installed up to 4BG at a time, and was down to 2GB on the UD2 as I mentioned before) - the ram really should work, it is on the gigabyte approved/tested list for the UD2 and the UD4.

As you mentioned one thing that seems odd is that the memory is listed as 1600 Mhz but the SPD detect in the bios (on both UD2 and UD4) says 1333 Mhz. I can manually change it to 1600 by using the 12x multiplier (whatever that means lol) but the system was unstable...might have been other factors contributing to instability but.. who knows- sooo many variables.

As for this new UD4, I took the a la carte approach with multibeast and used a "user supplied" DSDT which was included in a nice little download (see 4th post by timg: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=1342 ) from the audio forum that also happens to have a legacy HDA kext which enables my digital SPDIF out properly. sleep seems to work OK and I am praying to the hackintosh gods that it boots tomorrow and behaves itself.

The only things I changed in the BIOS (besides the usual) were to turn off "turbo" for the memory performance (supposed to help stability ie anti-overclocking?), and turn on all the CPU advanced options.

As for my UD2, I will probably try and find some cheap uber compatible ram when I get around to it, but for now I'm going to focus on this UD4, I seem to be having slightly better luck with it.

BTW: I have zero overclocking experience or skills, so anything I've attempted here is for the most part random stabs in the dark - a person with more PC building experience could no doubt get the memory set up correctly for this board, but not I, jedi.

Hi Homesnake,

Well, glad to hear you got new system up running OK.
Shame about the UD2, but hey, you are right...life's too short!!

well,

the UD4 kernel panics also, (4 GB of ram). I took out one of the two sticks and then it booted. (disk was hosed though, disk utility could not even repair, had to restore from backup!!) so I am going to try and RMA this ram and find some easier stuff to work with.

I am leaning towards the "ECO" Gskill, as it is supposed to run relatively cool on lower voltages.

Any recommendations are appreciated! :)

EDIT: installed memtest for mac, tested each stick individually and to my suprise one of the sticks failed - this one had previously passed memtest in windows - go figure.

I'm just running one (good) stick now, and have tweaked a couple settings in the BIOS according to this Gskill forum post just as an experiment:

I'm using 4x2GB of G.Skill ECOs on my UD4... Very pleased.
These run very cool... and being low-profile don't interfere with my Mugen-2.

However, note that you won't see them as 1600 unless you enable XMP...
And once you do that, you should enable all CPU advanced features, otherwise you'll get miserable GB scores.

Also, you'll have to patch the DSDT, as the one currently on the DB seems to have a problem WRT to sleep.

I just posted my fixed DSDT in viewtopic.php?p=13501#p13501

Good luck !

Thanks for the ram suggestion, I will give those a go.

I'm still messing with these original Gskills a bit, have set up the timings manually though I don't really know what I'm doing, just copying settings from other users (Gskill forums- same or very similar mobo/ram). I am hoping for some magic :lolno:

Ran memtest windows overnight, no probs on any of the 8 GB - I looked at the memtest for mac homepage and looks like the osx port may not work exactly as I had expected WRT large amounts of ram. http://www.memtestosx.org/joomla/index.php

Seems I should have chosen memory with the XMP feature - these particular Gskills don't have the XMP, which might have saved some headaches

Yea funny I seem to remember the gigabeast UD4 install not having full sleep - fans would never shut off- don't know if that's the same issue as inthe thread.

I haven't been able to edit a DSDT yet successfully, actually can't even do a clean extract but I seem to remember tony saying that DSDTSE is fussy. Once (if?) I get a stable machine going I will figure out the DSDT editing.
