Comments:

Hi all, this is my first hackintosh build:

This is going to be used mainly as a Pro Tools 10 recording rig and daily driver. After some initial messing around with UniBeast and re-seating memory chips this build is very stable. Just as stable as my "real" Mac, a 2010 Mac Mini.

Since this will live in my studio it has to be pretty quiet. I have been spoiled by the quietness of the Mini but this is very quiet and can probably be made very close to totally silent with the use of some Dynamat. For now though it is great. I am opening Pro Tools sessions that would choke almost any other system I have ever worked on and this guy isn't even breathing hard. I am running it slightly OC'd @ 4.00 GHz and getting 11000+ Geekbench. CPU Cores running right around 35-40C under load. Very happy with this build. :D Total cost ~$1000 US.

Tweaks:

GeForce 610 Patch:
http://www.tonymacx86.com/graphics/64658-nvidia-gt610-10-8-fix-4.html#post482129

I applied this patch before I installed the card for the first time. I was using the HD4000 graphics at the time. I applied the patch and shut down the system. Installed the card and booted into the bios setup where I disabled the on-board video. Booted the system up in verbose "-v" and have been happy ever since. :)

Ultra PCI-E Ethernet Card:
No tweaks but I did disable the on-board ethernet controller after I installed the card. It worked perfectly right out of the box.

System Definition:
I tried the standard MackPro3,1 but I found that MacBookPro8,1 works best for this build. It is rock solid and performs very well.

Thanks to all on tonymacx86.com! :)

EDIT: I started with the HD4000 graphics and then swapped in the GeForce GT 610. MacBookPro8,1 System Definition. VoodooHDA sound.

Frankencat's Gigabyte Z77-DS3H / i5 3570K build

What profile should I be using for this build? Right now I am seeing "MacBook Pro 13-inch, Early 2011" under About/More Info... It seems to be pretty stable but I was wondering if there is something better. Also, is there a way to backup your setting in Multibeast and then clear everything out and start fresh?

Thanks -Frank

The default is MacPro3,1 which works for almost all builds. (See page 3 of the MultiBeast Features document.)

Dude- you realize Pro Tools is not yet working fully or certified compatible with ML, right??

Go here:
http://www.tonymacx86.com/music/70219-hackintosh-pro-tools.html

study the thread & ESP check out post #20 for PT and compatibility info. If you don't have Lion, there's info at the end of the thread on how to order it.

Yep, it is actually "partially certified" as far as drivers etc. Avid is working on it and I have been in touch with them about my setup. Thanks for the link. :)

Stork, I tried MackPro3,1 but I found that MacBookPro8,1 works best for this build. I will add that to the notes. :)

Doing a session right now in PT 10.3.2. Everything is working great. PT is cranking away and I only have 2 cores allocated. :O)

Hi frankencat,

Nice build. I have a similar one with almost the same board - d3v vs d3p. Sorry was replying to 2 threads at the same time and got confused.

Just 2 questions:

Why did you use a PCI-e ethernet card? Didn't the onboard one work?

Wasn't the HD4000 fast enough? I'd expect the GT610 to be the same or maybe even lower in performance.

ns:

Why did you use a PCI-e ethernet card? Didn't the onboard one work?

The Atheros LAN on the Rev1.1 board he has doesn't/didn't work as there wasn't a driver for it.
However, Shailua on the insanelymac forums has just ported the latest driver for it, although it's still experimental.

Awesome Frankencat, both name and build!!!!!
I'm going for the GA-Z77-DS3H rev 1.1 head on knowing about the ethernet issue lol. Im using Logic though.
$15, is that the cheapest solution you came across? I'm sure the big wigs are gonna fix the rev 1.1 patch soon.

Thanks for sharing
