What if you are no more satisfied with your SkyLake/KabyLake CPU, but can't change motherboard?
Now we have solution which allows use even 6-core CoffeLake CPU on any H110 motherboard.
ShanDianXiaKeJi Store offers a lot of different laptop CPU with PCB adapter and custom metal socket frame for desktop Socket 1151.
Box set includes also three Torx screws and two Torx screwdrivers - one for removing screws and one for tightening new ones:
This
CPU has no metal lid, so it doesn't need delidding. But also it needs fullmetal CPU cooler bottom pad. No direct contact heatpipes, sorry.
Die is protected with yellow polyimide tape - don't forget remove it.
CPU bottom view:
It is bigger than usual Socket 1151 CPU:
That's why custom metal frame is used.
First of all you need to flash custom BIOS image into motherboard.
Those CPUs requires Corporative Intel ME version, so B360, H310, H370, Q370 and Z390 boards are not compatible.
You can get customized BIOS image or even free pre-flashed BIOS chip from CPU seller. Or you can use CoffeeTime tool to do BIOS mod yourself if you want to.
So, you already updated motherboard firmware or swapped EEPROM chip. Now you need to clear CMOS to proceed.
Disconnect power cable, remove old CPU and stock metal socket frame:
Then insert new CPU:
Place custom metal frame over it and tight three Torx screws:
Do not overtigtht screws - it can cause system fault at start. Now we can remove protective tape from die, apply thermal grease, place temporary heatsink and switch on the board.
First start will take some time - system will reboot, stop CPU fan and start it again as necessary. If all right, after 1-2 minutes you will get one "beep" and image on display will appear, shutdown the system.
CPU die is not situated in fiberglass board center:
It's center is shifted 2 mm to north and 3 mm to east from CPU socket center:
So you need to adjust CPU cooler mounting screws pressure or make custom adapter(I choose that way):
If you use 45W TDP CPU and want CPU cooler be low-profile, Zalman VF-700Cu is good choice:
Sadly, it has no PWM feature, so if your motherboard can't control 3-pin fan speed, you need to do PWM adapter yourself or swap fan to 4-pin PWM.
CPU cooler adaper is set up over socket frame with 8-mm insulating micarta gaskets:
Now we can put a thermal grease, install CPU cooler and it's PWM adapter:
Construction complete!
