Comments

Hello everyone! I am happy to say that I finally pulled the trigger and built my first Hackintosh. I know it's nothing too crazy. But this is the most powerful machine I've owned to date, and I got it all for less than a new 15" MacBook Pro, NO REGRETS!

Installation

For the first part of the build, I followed steps 1 & 2 on Tony's guide to create my UniBeast USB: (DO NOT INJECT ANY GRAPHICS)
https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/unibeast-install-macos-sierra-on-any-supported-intel-based-pc.200564/

For the rest of the build I followed Stork's guide with exception of a couple of items:
https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/storks-myhero-build-asus-rog-maximus-viii-hero-i7-6700k-gtx-760.197284/

The items I did not follow were:

NOTE: The entire installation and setup was done using integrated graphics. I installed the RX460 after I successfully setup my machine.

Booting with AMD RX460
NOTE: Before installing the RX460 into your machine make sure to set your integrated graphics to primary in the BIOS.

There is an issue with Clover right now that causes you to have a black screen on boot with the RX 4XX cards at the moment, however the Asus MAXIMUS VIII HERO motherboard has a little feature that comes in handy when booting.

The Asus MAXIMUS VIII HERO motherboard has a little display at the top right which provides codes/numbers based on what the motherboard is doing. I noticed that while booting the display will go through a bunch of codes and then show "99", "Ad", and then hang at "99" - this is when the clover boot menu is active. I know that my Windows boot option is directly to the left of my MacOs boot option so during this time if I need to boot up in Windows I'll press the left arrow key once and then hit enter. Make sure to be be alert and make the switch relatively quick as MacOS boots up by default pretty quickly. I hope this helps other owners and potential owners of this motherboard not have to worry so much about "blind booting".

Working:

Everything is working! Well, everything is reported working I should say... The things currently not working for me(iMessage, Intel 530 Graphics, Continuity & Handoff) are things that are reported working for everyone else - but things I couldn't be bothered to fix.

Possible Issues
  • Audio Audio only works using the rear green output port. My first installation of MacOs picked up the audio line out immediately, however on my second installation as reported by others on Stork's thread - you may have to restart your computer a couple of times before it gets detected.
  • Intel 530 Graphics I tried a few guides to get rid of the artifacts, including the one on the front page of this website but I could not get my PC to boot after making the changes. I decided to do a fresh installation and forget about it because my RX460 is fully supported with no modifications. I know others have gotten it working so it may not be an issue for you all.

Hey man, compliments on rocking this beast!!
I have a similar system, also cant get the HD630 to work and also have an RX460, but I have the ASUS STRIX Version, and it is not fully supported in OSX.
Was wondering if your GIGABYTE Radeon RX460 WINDFORCE OC 4GB worked perfectly when you pluged it in, or did you mod anything, also what settings did you use in config.plist? maybe you could attach it?

Thanks in advance!

Hey man! Sorry for the late reply, I hadn't checked my secondary email account in a while.

Yeah at the time of building this hackintosh none of the ASUS RX4XX cards were working, the GIGABYTE cards were getting the most success specifically the GIGABYTE RADEON RX460 WINDFORCE OC 4GB - it works out of the box no modifications necessary. I think it has to do with the fact that it does not require extra power from the PSU, it gets all of its power from the motherboard. You will have the black screen on boot so just set your Intel Graphics as primary in BIOS and you'll be all set!

Can you please tell me how does KRAKEN works for you? Since it does not have any software that runs under OSX, is it working under load automatically? Thanks Jakub

I had a second hard drive with Windows 10 installed and I would use the NZXT CAM software to adjust the KRAKEN's settings. The KRAKEN remembers it's last set settings so once you boot up into macOS it will use the settings you had set in Windows. However for this reason I do not recommend getting the KRAKEN for your hackintosh. I recommend going air cooled that way you can set the fan settings in the bios - or find a liquid cooler that allows you to do so(I haven't found one yet).
