First, thank you all for the community here. I can't imagine attempting a build without such a great resource and knowing there's a place I can go if I get stuck.

This will be my first hackintosh build. I'm trying to put together a solid design and development box for daily use where I'll be mostly using Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, etc. with rather large files. The build is based very closely on the current Ivy Bridge CustoMac Pro with a few small changes. I changed the case, CPU cooler and power supply based on recommendations for a quiet box. I've also doubled the RAM (maybe overkill) and used a Western Digital Black HD instead of the Seagate. I've had very bad luck with Seagate HD's in the past. I am not planning on a dual-boot, this will be OSX only.

A couple of questions:
  1. Do I need an optical drive for installation? In the past, I've installed OSX on actual Apple hardware using just a USB stick or cloning an existing OSX drive. I have a Mac Mini in the house and more USB drives than I know what to do with.
  2. Is FireWire booting still possible with a hackintosh build?
  3. If the answer is yes, any recommendations on a FireWire card? Before my MacBook Pro died I got very used to using SuperDuper to clone drives, and to boot from them via FireWire.

My shopping list:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
  • CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS9500 AT Ball Bearing CPU Cooler
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5 TH ATX LGA1155 Motherboard
  • Memory: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (x2 for 16GB)
  • Storage: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
  • Video Card: EVGA GeForce GT 640 2GB Video Card
  • Case: Fractal Design Define R4 (Titanium Grey) ATX Mid Tower Case
  • Power Supply: PC Power & Cooling Silencer MK III 400W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply
  • WiFi: TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 WiFi Adapter

1. No you do not need a opticial drive for installation
2. I am not sure if firewire boot still works ... I am guessing yes .
3. Many users have recommended this fire wire card : http://www.befr.ebay.be/itm/Syba-2x...US_Internal_Network_Cards&hash=item4604eb7f08

You only need an optical drive if you have/buy software that comes on CD/DVD or you want to watch/play CDs/DVDs on your computer. Don't need it for an OS X install (unless you are doing Snow Leopard).

Your selected motherboard has a FireWire (1394) header, but it doesn't look like your case has a FireWire port. My case (Corsair Carbide 400R) had a FireWire port on it and all I had to do was connect the wire bundle from the case to the FireWire header on the motherboard. Not sure if boot from FireWire is supported because I've never tried it.
