Hi all,
I'm fairly new to the Hackintosh community- studying and saving for a few years, I just now completed my first build with very little problems.
I chose to do a G5 case mod, utilizing my father, a machinist, to help with some of the cutting, etc.
First, my specs:
• i7-3770k- http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i7-3770K-Quad-Core-Processor-Cache/dp/B007SZ0EOW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356578463&sr=8-1&keywords=3770k
• EVGA GTX-670- http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Dual-Link-Graphics-02G-P4-2670-KR/dp/B007Z3HZIA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1356578494&sr=1-1&keywords=evga+gtx+670
• Gigabyte ga-z77x-up5-th - http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Intel-Thunderbolt-Motherboard-GA-Z77X-UP5-TH/dp/B008LTB3QW/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1356578526&sr=1-2&keywords=ga-z77x-ud5h-th
• Corsair Vengeance 16gb RAM- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006EWUO22/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
• Corsair 850w PS - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003PJ6QW4/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i00
• Thermaltake 80mm fans - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003819S74/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00
->Ordered, but not installed yet.
• Samsung 256 gb SSD (owned)- http://www.amazon.com/SAMSUNG-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7PC256B-WW/dp/B0077CR66A/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1356580436&sr=1-3&keywords=samsung+ssd+sata3
• Western Digital 2TB Black (owned)- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002MD05SA/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00
• Western Digital 1TB Green (owned)- http://www.amazon.com/WD-Green-Desktop-Hard-Drive/dp/B0053YKMGA/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1356580159&sr=1-2&keywords=western+digital+1TB+green
• PowerMac G5 casemod w/
->MountainMod brushed 2x80mm fan ATX Mobo Tray- http://www.mountainmods.com/mountain-mods-modular-removable-motherboard-tray-p-56.html
->Sans Digital HDDRACK5 5-Bay Hard Drive Rack - http://www.amazon.com/Sans-Digital-HDDRACK5-5-Bay-Organizing/dp/B001LF40KE/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1323798496&sr=8-7/
-->I purchased this rack over a year ago. Wanting the open trays to face forward, I removed the fan from the rear and attached it to the left. I still need another 24pin ATX cable to attach this to the PS.
To install, I used an old Logitech Mouse (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DJ64C0/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00) and an old PC keyboard I had lying around.
Because I am an extreme novice to computer building, let alone to a hackintosh, I used multiple online resources/posts from TonyMac, as well as a post from lifehacker.
• On everything- http://www.tonymacx86.com/79-ultimate-g5-mod-resource-thread.html
->This is magnificent.
• On taking apart my G5- http://g5.bhmm.net
• On building a PC- http://lifehacker.com/5827491/how-to-build-a-computer-from-scratch-lesson-3-building-the-computer
• On help with my Bios settings- http://www.tonymacx86.com/user-buil...ore-i7-3770k-32gb-ram-gigabyte-gtx-650-a.html
• On help with Unibeast - http://www.tonymacx86.com/61-unibeast-install-os-x-mountain-lion-any-supported-intel-based-pc.html
• On help with Multibeast settings - http://www.tonymacx86.com/mountain-...65213-post-your-multibeast-5-screenshots.html
->Because I'm using the GTX-670 and not HD4000, I also selected Customization -> Boot Options -> GraphicsEnabler=No.
Upon doing all of this, I had very little problems.
• Audio works
• Wifi doesn't work. (Using the GC-WB-300D card that came with ga-z77x-up5-th.) Has anyone found a solution to this? Read some forums, doesn't look like it. My solution was to order this because I heard it works OOB. Waiting for it to arrive: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007GMPZ0A/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
• Bluetooth Works (Using the GC-WB-300D card that came with ga-z77x-up5-th.) Because I'm changing my wifi card, I also purchased this, waiting for it to arrive: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007GFX0PY/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i01
• Sleep works with random keyboard connected by usb cord.
• Sleep doesn't wake from usb logitech mouse
• All ports that I have tested have worked (Haven't tested Thunderbolt, Digital Audio, eSata, Mic in)
My current problem:
My Hack only works when the G5 case is laying flat, with the PS resting on top. When I place the PS inside, sitting at the bottom, and turn the case vertical- my monitor receives no signal. The LED also reads A0.
• I tried having the case vertical and the PS outside of the case - didn't work
• I tried having the case horizontal and the PS inside where it would normally sit (therefore, PS was on it's side) - didn't work
• I lay the case down and pull the PS out and place on top - works.
Am I missing something? Please help if you have an idea!
I plan to add my final parts, buy a liquid CPU cooler to over clock, adding 16gb more RAM, purchasing a new monitor, etc. But upon first test, geekbench came in over 13,000. I will keep everyone updated! Thank you Tonymac and the rest of the Tonymacx86 community for all your help!
