Hi,

I have read a lot of compatibility posts for firewire that are to do with Express PCI. I do not have an option for this since my only PCI Express slot is being used by a TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 N900 for my WIFI. I definitely need firewire, however, since I have an M-Audio ProFire 610 which I have to connect for music.

So, are there any recommendations for PCI based Firewire cards?

Sonnet Allegro FW400 or FW800 - either works in a Mac Pro 4,1 2008 model up through Mavericks at least.

On their website it says compatibility stops at 10.5 (Leopard).

Good shout though. Anybody got this working?

I found this a Micro Center the other day. I'm wondering if this will work OTB, it says Mac compatible (hopeful) https://drive.google.com/file/d/14AjWs6WZWgVBI7g0NiAEwFZqWUqz8s-uMg/view?usp=sharing

Any idea if that card is OS X compatible?

Depends on which version of OS X you use and whether they've updated the drivers for that
version. Give it a try, if it doesn't work return it for a refund. Report back how it goes in this

Just in case anybody was wondering, I found a card and it is working 100% with El Capitan and it is indeed a PCI card.

Here is the link for those in the UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00006B8EQ/?tag=tonymacx86-21

It is a StarTech PCI1394MP. I am routing an M-Audio Profire 610 for music and there seems to be no issues with latency in or out. It was plug and play.

Cannot be more stoked right now. This seems to be the cheapest working option in the UK. :D:D:D

There is a 4 port (3 external 1 internal) version at Amazon.com for those in the USA. Costs
even less than the one you've linked. Nice find. Will help those with older FW only devices.
Amazing that a 13 year old card, dating back to Jaguar, could still work with El Capitan.

My thoughts exactly. In the UK there doesn't seem to be a cheap option. Anything that's $30 in the US PCIe wise costs about £35 in the UK which is a huge hike.

To have this at £15, and to be PCI rather than PCIe; it's great to have that option. I didn't think it would work. On their website I believe it says something along the lines of the last version of OSX they support is 10.4.

The box it came in looked so 90s that I thought it was a sure bet to be outdated hardware. But there you are. I'll never use the whole 3 ports to be fair - it's only for one device.

I hope people who are looking for the same thing stumble on this post and it be of use to them.
