It depends on how the external SSD is connected - via USB caddy or eSATA.
There is a common KextsToPatch fix for external drives appearing as internal. You can add it to your config.plist. Use the search function in the menu above.
eSATA drives can be problematic depending on the type of set-up used. For example if the eSATA drive connects via separate SATA and Power cables the motherboard will see it as Internal anyway, because it is connected in the same way they are etc.
