Ersterhernd's NUCiMac G4

Thought I'd finally post something here too since I've been reading the forums for years now :)

Finally found (and bought) a decent iMac 20" last week so I'll be modding that one very soon. It will be used as an office mac in my company, since the design of the old iMac is so pretty it will be all the way up front at the reception.

I've been juggling many ideas the past weeks (once I knew I'd be buying the iMac), but what are your thoughts on these:
- Gigabyte Brix (pro)
- Zotac Zbox

Or would you say that a NUC Core i3 3217U packs more than enough punch for office, light photoshopping a simple video edit every now and again?

Hi Vishaakje, I recommend browsing my 20" G4 thread...

I would only recommend the i3 NUC, make sure to get the one with the Ethernet port.

Just my 2c.

Good Luck!

First thing i'm gonna do is make my screen external, so I can use my old macbook with broken screen on it. Can someone verify/add the parts I need for making it to a DVI connection? It is not easy to understand everything on dremeljunkie ( http://www.dremeljunkie.com/2011/08/guide-step-by-step-17-imac-g4-tmds-to.html ) because i'm foreign(Dutch).

picopsu power converter

If it al works, I make an easy explained step-by-step video for other people that want to mod their old iMac G4 :thumbup:And maybe also start my own topic?
Thanks in advance !

Proxify, what are you going to use inside? A NUC? The previous generation runs at 19v so that picopsu won't likely work unless you're using the newer 12v generation of NUC. All versions of NUC come with a 65w power adapter which is enough for a 17" G4 build, and is very small too.

Good Luck!

For now... I just want to make that cable so I can use my iMac G4 screen. Macbook white unibody -> Mini displayport to DVI adapter to iMac G4 screen..
And begin 2015 i'm gonna place a intel nut kit inside that is compatible with OSX Yosemite :D

this is a screenshot on the g4, but it would be awesome to work with Yosemite

Ahhhh I see now. I had some artifacting issues trying to convert mDP to DVI on my iMac G5 project. Hopefully you don't have the same troubles.

Good Luck.

Dear Esterhernd, I m about to hard wire, solder everything up on my Transmac g4.
As I wrote on my thread I completed my wiring with the 800mhz instructions although mine was a 1Ghz model.
Since English is not my native language could you please verify your original Nucimac's wiring simplification. You say you wire pins 14 to 16 with a 1 kohm resistor. And you wired the red from the grey lcd cable direct to 3.3v. Did you mean that, thats it? The cable that leaves from pin 14 doesnt split?

Thank you very much.

I've discovered that this is the easiest way to do it. Should've done this with all the iMac builds.

Pic shows 14&16 soldered direct with resistor and pin 15 with a ground wire attached. Carefully applied a little yellow shrink tubing to protect from shorts.

This turned out to be a simpler solution than rewiring the Vedid/Hot Plug Detect loop into the TMDS.

Cheers!

Haven't seen this pic before, but this is how I did it.

Good Luck.

Lit mine up yesterday. Haswell NUC, connected TMDS cable shield to ground using alligator clips. Picture looks normal.

Now how do I tell artifacts apart from dead pixels?
