I just discovered that My ASUS drive makes the same thing too!
and I've read on insanelymac that this issue makes Auto Sleep DOESN'T WORK!

can anybody confirm that ?

For me auto sleep not working, but manual sleep works though.

The only DVD drives that work correctly are Sony or Pioneer (which Apple ships)

Yeah I've read that in the posts,.

But do you have any idea what would be the cause of this issue?
there must be a fix..

I mean, why would some drives get random polling rather than others..

It must be an osx/drivers issue.

I have an ASUS DVD-RW drive and it does exactly the same thing. I may be crazy but I am pretty sure my DVD drive on my Windows 7 machine (with Gig MA-790 board) does it too. Maybe a Gigabyte thing?

The only known fix is replacing drive or keeping a disc in the drive.

Well I took the time and read through this whole thread!

there is a guy who has a samsung dvd drive which does the same issue,

and it turned out to be that guy is insanely lucky!

first he tries to fix the issue through DSDT to no avail, then he contacts Samsung tech support telling them about the issue, and then what ?
they looked into the matter and released a firmware fix!! lol

that does not happen everyday...

however, as it turned out to be a firmware issue, I made some digging and found that my drive can be "Crossflashed" to another brand unless they are the same chipset/components or one of them is a rebrand of the other, and it turns out to be that I can crossflash it to multiple Liteon models

I will test and report back

also I found this post in the apple discussions forums, it appears that they are experiencing a similar problem, and some fixes introduced throughout the thread...

maybe some people can try one of these fixes and report back.

I found a simple solution to this problem, which doesn't happen with my Sony Optiarc.

However, I also have a TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-H653Z (Firmware Revision 4403) and the DVD light would come on every 7 minutes like clockwork.

So I unchecked "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" in the Energy Saver Preferences, and voila!

Best DVD drive for Hackintosh is SONY AD7260-S 24X SATA OEM!!! ENJOY!!!
