Will any internal DVD drive work in a Hackintosh?

yes, with this caveat: not all drives will allow the machine to sleep due to the optical drive's firmware checking for the presence of a disc. Sometimes you can put in a blank disc and the machine will sleep, sometimes not.

Do your reserach and check the recommended drives in the buyer's guide and also look at the builds in the User Builds forum, as many builders used other drives that were available to them instead of those recommended in the buyer's guide and found that they worked.

I can personally recommend the Pioneer BDR-207DBK or the Pioneer BDR-208DBK.
I can also recommend the Pioneer DVR-S20 BK DVD-RW.

I installed the Pioneer BDR-208DBK. Have you had any issues with the OS losing control of the drive? Prior to the error I get a popup requesting how to handle a newly inserted blank disk. The drive is empty though.
