I have a friend who does serious HD video editing. He's looking to build an 8-core system. Can anyone recommend a good dual-CPU motherboard?

Mac Pro :D

Seriously, the dual CPU Mac Pro's are very price competitive. A hack version is not that much less money.

I beg to differ. Mac Pros WERE price competitive when I bought mine in 2006, especially compared to Dell's high-end dual-Xeon configurations. But my BTO max CPU options (fastest clock speed, dual CPU) only cost $600 over the best stock configuration. Maxed out (minus RAM and HDs which I never buy from Apple), $3999 ($3599 educational).

Today we're looking at $6199 for the 2.93 GHz dual 6-core, a hard price to swallow unless you have money to burn. Especially considering you can overclock a Hackintosh, leading to 40-50% faster performance in a 12-core model over a real Mac Pro for under $4K, or equivalent performance in an 8-core model. That's assuming you can get OS X to run on it. :)

OK, I just checked Dell, and their dual 6-core setup does cost $6499, so maybe Apple's OK, but building your own system and overclocking will get you there at 1/3 to 2/3 the cost.

i will try a system builded around the Asus motherboard model: Z8PE-D12

New egg currently has a combo deal for a z8na-d6c MB with 2 e5620. With this you can do a cheap build for around 1500. This will get you a 8 core 5,1 west mere model Mac pro with 12gb ram. (graphics card will be an el cheapo, but feel free to upgrade)

Here is a newegg cart w/no graphics card or Hd for 1300

Just chiming in.

I'm with MacMan.

You may be able to build a splendiferous dual cpu 12 core monster but you will not be able to have a commiserate graphics card/s in it.

I'm already running one of the fastest possible CustoMac cards GTX-470 and it is nice but I have to switch to Windows when I want to do frame by frame stepping because in OS X I only get 32 Fps but in win the same card pushes nearly 60Fps.

My 980x is great for encoding but the actual editing requires equivalent GPU prowess which as I understand at present just isn't possible on a CustoMac.

The theory of a DiY dual CPU is good but the reality is only going to drive you up the wall.

If you are serious about video editing then it is likely some part of your income, so right off the cost of a real mac or get a kind investor to help you out on the startup costs.

Just my 2Cents.
