Hello everyone.

I'm planning to build a powerful workstation machine with a Gigabyte X79 motherboard and hopefully an i7-4930K. I know that the new MacPro is out and Mavericks has been updated to 10.9.1. Can anyone please tell me if they have a working i7-4930K in their machine? Does it work natively with Mavericks now?

Thanks for your help!

There is no support from Apple as yet for this CPU - it will arrive, but it is likely to be a few weeks off yet. Some people have managed to get their rig up and running using this kernel (not sure that I would trust it as it is originally from 10.7)

The best option is to use a natively supported kernel but that support is not available in Mavericks yet.

Thanks for the advise! I decided to go with an over clocked i7-4770K instead. I suppose an X79 build may pose a few more roadblocks.

The i7-4770K is a great processor, the X79 build really need the full 64GB RAM to get the most from them - not al lot of point using then with only 8GB or 16GB RAM - you are better with the i7 as it is actually faster.

Are you 100% sure the i7 4930K will be supported in the nearby future? If it will work, I could allready purchase it and start building But I've read that OSX 10.9.2 was tested, and there are no updates for this processor/ chipset yet.

I need a fast video editing machine (Premiere/ After effects) the sooner the better.
The i7 3930K is not available anymore so I am waiting for the i7 4930K (and a suitable mobo) to get in the buyersguide / golden builds, as this will be my first build.

I don't actually work for Apple or Intel - I have zero inside knowledge. One thing that I do know and I am aware of is the new Mac Pro uses a special factory only release of 10.9.1 that has support for the new Ivy Bridge processors. Apple often release new hardware like this and we then see support from Apple in the next OS X incremental update. I can offer no guarantees as I am not in a position to do so. The balance of probability shows that Apple support will follow soon.

There are a number of other X79 (mainly ASUS) boards that are used by a wide range of users. X99 is due out March/April from memory - if you want some thing soon then do your home work well and don't panic buy.

I'm running the 4930k with the patched kernel. It blazes...26000 on Geekbench. I'm running Mavericks 10.9.1 and Protools 11. Using the Asus P9x79 Pro, 32GBs of RAM, GeForce 770 and with the Samsung 840 Pro I'm getting close to 600MB of data transfer. There's actually a lot of support available on the web

Hey,
I have the same CPU. Do you know how to patch the Kernel? I don't know :(

OSX 10.9.1 is installed on my USB and now? Copy and Paste the Kernel in which folder? :banghead:

Thanks so much
Marco
