I booted up my recovery HD using single user verbose, entered the commands:
/sbin/fsck -fy and /sbin/mount -uw / only to get the alert "disk2s1: device is write locked." How do i make this writeable? Isn't that what -uw is supposed to do?

Edit: re-read the original better

I think the recovery disk is read-only because it's just a static image you can use to install/repair from.

Your main system partition should not be write-locked. If you boot to recovery normally, it typically mounts your system drive under /Volumes/YourDriveName (though it may not do that if you boot to recovery in single-user mode -- I'm not sure there's any point in doing so)
