Customac Won't Wake From Sleep

I had this problem with 10.6.8 but not with 10.7.5. Lion was the best running OS I've had on this customac so far. Never ran 10.8 but now that I'm running 10.9 the computer goes to sleep but can only be woken up by pressing a key, then unplugging and replugging a usb device and then pressing a key again. How can I fix this? My system specs are as indicated in my signature.

Updated to 10.9.2 and still got the wake up problem.

FWIW I gave up with sleep and told the system to never sleep. Wastes power, yes, but saves me from tearing my hair our out trying to find a solution....especially it seems with external USB3 drives involved!

Thanks for your reply. I haven't been able to tell if this is a widespread problem or not, but nobody else seems to be interested in addressing it so I'm thinking most people aren't experiencing this issue.

I wonder if it's a problem related to my specific hardware. My Z68 motherboard, i3 2105 processor, etc., etc? I notice your set up is pretty similar.
