Hey guys,

I bought a new pair of headphones ATH-M40x from AudioTechnica and they work perfectly on the same PC when on windows, however, on Catalina unless I use them at extremely low volumes I hear a very bad crackling noise.

What could this be? Can anyone point me in the right direction to troubleshoot?

I'm currently using AppleALC.kext (v 1.4.6) - Running on Catalina 10.15.3

Nobody knows? :(

Hi there.

Yes, it's an annoying problem.

Depending on the type of noise you are hearing, there are two common causes as far as I can see:

1) Crackle when you move the mouse.

2) A general background "twittering".

If it is 1) you are suffering from, change the USB port you are using, or configure the ports if you haven't already. If it is a noise caused by a wireless mouse, then again, move the receiver.

If it is 2) that is more difficult to trace - especially if it doesn't occur when using Windows. Are you using AppleALC? Are you using VooDooHDA? Are you using the ALC1220 installer?

:)

Thanks for your reply UtterDisbelief!

It's definitely #2 - and the crackling gets worse the higher I increase the volume.

I am using AppleALC - not using Voodoo or ALC1220
